” Marvin Gaye ” is by Charlie Puth. Written by Charlie and Julie Frost with guest vocals by Meghan Trainor.
The song uses the reference to the iconic soul singer with the lyrics being used to ignite a romance with someone and get them in the mood for love.
Charlie came up with the chorus for his debut single quickly, sitting in a cafe in Hollywood he found himself tapping out the beat.
Along with referencing the singer Marvin Gaye, Charlie uses another iconic singer by the name of Ben E King in the song, the bass line for ” Stand by Me ” by the late singer in used in the song.
Critics were to be divided over the song, some hailing it as a catchy pop song on par with “Uptown Funk” by chart-toppers Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. However, some music critics were not quite so enthusiastic and branded ” Marvin Gaye ” the second worst song of 2015. Some have even questioned why the Gaye estate hadn’t launched a lawsuit as they did with ” Blurred Lines ” by Robin Thicke.
Mixed critical reviews mean nothing if the record buying public like the song, and they certainly did. ” Marvin Gaye ” was a commercial success for Charlie.
In the United States, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number eighty-seven, then moved steadily to number twenty-one. The second Top Forty single for Charlie in the country.
When released in the United Kingdom, ” Marvin Gaye ” entered the UK Singles Chart at number ninety, there it stayed for a week before climbing to take the top spot. The song spent one week at Number One and a total of twenty-four weeks on the chart. With this Number One both Charlie and Meghan notched up their second chart-topping single in the country.
