” Merry Christmas Everyone ” is by Shakin’ Stevens ( Michael Barratt ), the singer-songwriter from Wales, in the United Kingdom. The song was written by Bob Heatlie, the Scottish songwriter and producer. Bob wrote the 1981 UK Number One single ” Japanese Boy ” performed by Aneka ( Mary Sandeman ). Along with writing hit singles for other artists, Bob is a successful producer of musical scores for television.
Production for the single was by Dave Edmunds, the Singer, guitarist and record producer from Wales. Although Dave had many hit singles in the 1970s and 80s he is best remembered for his 1970 UK Number One single ” I Hear You Knocking “, a cover first recorded in 1955 by New Orleans R&B artist Smiley Lewis.
On the B-side Shakin’ Stevens sings a cover of ” Blue Christmas “, written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson and first recorded in 1948 by Doye O’Dell. It is Elvis Presley’s version of the song is by far the most famous.
A demo was made in a garage studio in Edinburgh owned by the song’s writer Bob Heatlie. Bob said of the recording the demo ” I’ll never forget that. It was in the summer of 1984, and with no ventilation in the studio, I was sweating like a pig! It was quite weird; there I was wearing nothing but a pair of shorts, shaking sleigh bells, and singing about snow falling “.
” Merry Christmas Everyone ” was due to be released in 1984 ready for the Christmas singles market. However, it was announced that the Band Aid charity single was to be released as a single at the same time. Hearing the news, Shakin’ Stevens decided to delay his single until the following year.
The accompanying video features a young girl called Samantha travelling by plane to Santaworld. The Santa Claus-based theme park is situated on the Gesunda Mountain near Mora in Sweden.
There she meets Shakin’ Stevens who met her on a bus travelling there. The video shows Shakin’ Stevens riding on a sleigh with a woman dressed in an Elf’s costume, visiting Santa’s workshop with children playing with toys, having a snowball fight with some children and ends up being chased by a woman who he hits with a snowball. The video ends with him saying goodbye to Santa, the children and the snowman.
The children featured in the video included the son and daughter of Shakin’ Stevens, their friends and Sarah J Price, the child actor.
” Merry Christmas Everyone ” was a commercial success for Shakin’ Stevens. In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 7th of December 1985 and reached Number One which it held for two weeks over Christmas. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fifty-two weeks on the UK chart.
The song also made the lower reaches on many charts in Europe and had become a favourite festive song ever since.
