Mickey Toni Basil

” Mickey ” is by Toni Basil, the American singer and choreographer. The song was released in 1982 and taken from her debut album, Word of Mouth.
Written first by the 70s hit writers Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, ” Mickey ” was first performed by the English 70s-80s group Racey.
Formerly called ” Kitty ” the song first appeared on their first album, Smash and Grab.
For this version, Toni Basil changed the title from ” Kitty ” which was about a woman to ” Mickey ” which was to be a man.
This change caused some speculation for the reason of the difference, and some said it was for Toni’s fondness for the Monkees singer Mickey Dolenz after she met him on the set of the film Head.
Toni had been doing the choreography for the film. However, she denied this and said she didn’t know him that well. Added to this rumour was the actual meaning intended for the lines ” any way you want to do it / I’ll take it like a man “. Supposedly the Gender swapped lyrics referred to the sexual act of anal sex, again this was disputed by Toni in which she called the rumour ” ridiculous “.
The video was filmed in 1981 and involved Cheerleaders in a dance routine, Toni directed, produced and choreographed the dance.
The cheerleader routine used in the video came about because Toni had been a Cheerleader herself, in the video she wears a sweater with LVHS which is from her former High School.
The video for ” Mickey ” was often played on MTV a great deal, shot in 1981 it is considered to be the very first video to use dance routines that had been choreographed.
In the opening sequence of the video, a Cheerleader jumps through the centre of a human pyramid; this practice is now illegal in Cheerleading competitions.
Commercial success for Toni, ” Mickey ” reached the Number One position on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, where it held the spot for only one week.
In the United Kingdom, the song also reached the higher echelons of the charts with a number two position. However, Toni Basil and her song ” Mickey ” was to be her only Top Forty hit, and she has gone into the one hit wonders box.
VH1 named ” Mickey ” at number five on their 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of All Time.
