The song was written quickly in a bedroom in Los Angeles, California. John said of the writing that he was ” in the middle of a lot of personal stuff. I couldn’t really explain or get the better of “. Lyrically the song describes how he misses his ex-lover, however in the chorus he lies to himself and denies missing her.
The accompanying music video was directed by Kort Falkenberg III, who also wrote and produced the video. Filming took place in Los Angeles in the summer of 1984.
Many believed the street scene in the video was of New York or London, Kort sought a location in downtown Los Angeles which had ” no Stucco ” on the walls, which would have given away where the video was filmed. His intention was for the scenes to be as neutral as possible and not allow the viewer to associate it with any particular city.
” Missing You ” was a commercial success for John. In the United States the song reached Number One and held the top position for 1 week. It spent a total of 24 weeks on the chart there. It was the only song on the Billboard hot 100 Chart during 1984 to spend only 1 week at the top, all the other songs that made Number One spent a minimum of 2 weeks at the top.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 29th of September 1984 and reached a peak of number 9. It spent 3 weeks in the top ten and a total of 11 weeks on the UK chart.
