Mississippi Pussycat



” Mississippi ” is by Pussycat, the Dutch group. The song was written by Werner Theunissen, the Dutch composer and lyricist. Production for the single was by Eddy Hilberts.
Pussycat consisted of sisters Betty, Marianne and Toni Kowalczyk. Along with the three sisters, the rest of the group was made up of Lou Willé, Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans and John Theunissen.
” Mississippi ” was written in 1969 by Werner Theunissen after hearing the Bee Gees song ” Massachusetts “. However, he shelved it when country music was being overtaken in popularity by rock and pop music.
The group went ahead and made a demo under the then name of Sweet Reaction to EMI Bovema ( Netherlands EMI ), one song that was included was ” Mississippi “. This song stood out and grabbed the attention of EMI Bovema, and soon the band was signed to the label.
Despite having other hit records, Pussycat will be associated with the song forever; the 1975 Number One single is still considered to be the group’s signature song.
The song propelled the group into the charts around the world, ” Mississippi ” was to go on and reach Number One in thirty countries.
A massive hit in the United Kingdom for the group, the song first charted there on the 28th August 1976 and reached the top soon after. It remained at the top for four weeks and spent a total of twenty-one weeks on the charts.
Pussycat also had a Number One in Germany where it was certified Gold with sales of 250,000 copies.
The song was also a chart-topper in other European countries along with New Zealand. Australia they didn’t quite make it to the top and stalled at number two.
In Brazil,” Mississippi ” was to be as successful. There the song stayed on the charts for 129 weeks.
It is estimated that Pussycat sold over 5 million copies worldwide, even today Pussycat’s ” Mississippi ” is still a favourite with pop music and country music fans alike.
