” MMMBop ” is by Hanson, the American pop rock band. The core of the group is made up of brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson, who originated from Tulsa, Oklahoma in the United States.
In support of the band is Dimetres Collins and Andrew Perusi, both have toured and performed live with Hanson since 2007. The brothers have sold over 16 million records worldwide, in the United States they have had six singles reach the Top Forty, and eight albums make the chart, in the United Kingdom their tally stands at eight Top Forty singles.
The song was written by Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson. Production for the single was by the Dust Brothers. Producers E.Z. Mike ( Michael Simpson ) and King Gizmo ( John King ) are based in Los Angeles, California.
The production duo is best known for their sample-based music during the 80s and 90s and their work with the Beastie Boys, Beck and the soundtrack to the film Fight Club, the 1999 film which starred Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.
” MMMBop ” was released on the 15th of April 1997 by record labels Mercury and PolyGram ( both Universal Music Group ) and taken as the lead single from Hanson’s debut album, Middle of Nowhere.
The album had five singles released which were ” MMMBop “, ” Where’s the Love “, ” I Will Come to You “, ” Weird ” and ” Thinking of You “. Middle of Nowhere sold 10 million copies worldwide, with just short of 4 million in the United States, where it went 4x Platinum. In the United Kingdom, sales reached in the region of 400,000 copies.
The accompanying music video was directed by Tamra Davis, the American film, television and music video director. She has worked with a variety of artists including The Lemonheads, Bette Midler, Young MC, The Smiths and Depeche Mode. Married to Mike D of the Beastie Boys, Tamra has also written a cookbook called Make Me Something Good to Eat.
” MMMBop ” was a commercial success for Hanson. In the United States, the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, spending three weeks at the top. It spent twenty-two weeks on the chart there. The song also reached number twenty-one on the Adult Contemporary, five on the Adult Top 40 and Number One on the Mainstream Top 40 Charts.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 7th of June 1997 and peaked at Number One, a position it held for three weeks. It spent six weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirteen weeks on the UK chart. Sales for the single in the UK reached 710,000 copies.
” MMMBop ” reached Number One in 27 countries. In 1998 it was nominated for two Grammys at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards, held at the Radio City Music Hall, New York City.
