” Mull of Kintyre ” is by Wings, the British-American rock band. Wings were formed by Sir Paul McCartney ( James Paul McCartney, MBE ) in 1971.
The group included Paul’s late wife Linda McCartney who played keyboards, Denny Seiwell on drums and ex-Moody Blues member Denny Laine on guitar.
The song was written by Paul McCartney ( also produced ) and Denny Laine ( Brian Frederick Hines ). Denny, formerly with the English rock band the Moody Blues, is an English musician, singer, songwriter and guitarist. He sang on the band’s ” Go Now ” which was a hit in 1964.
The double A-side ( Girls School is the other ) was released on the 11th of November 1977 by record label Capitol Records ( part of the Universal Music Group ), both tracks were independent of any albums.
” Mull of Kintyre ” is the name of the south-western point of the Kintyre Peninsula in southwest Scotland. The coast of Antrim in Northern Ireland can be seen on a clear day, and it’s the home of a historic lighthouse, which was the second commissioned in Scotland.
The term ” Mull ” is very often used in the southwest of Scotland to describe a tip of a peninsula.
Paul and Linda lived in High Park Farm, a 600-acre estate near Campbeltown, which he bought in 1966. It was there that the song was recorded on the 9th of August 1977 in the Spirit of Ranachan Studio, a converted barn.
In an interview, Paul explained how the song came about ” I certainly loved Scotland enough, so I came up with a song about where we were living: an area called Mull of Kintyre. It was a love song really, about how I enjoyed being there and imagining I was travelling away and wanting to get back there. ”
Paul’s vocals and acoustic guitar were recorded outside on the farm with the bagpipes and drums of the Campbeltown Pipe Band added later.
Interviewed for the thescottishsun.co.uk, Paul told of the experience with the Campbeltown Pipe Band ” They started playing. It was a fantastic sound, a very emotional sound. Loud, very loud. In a few takes, they had it. ”
There were twenty-one members of the Campbeltown Pipe Band and each member was paid a standard musicians union fee for their part. However after the song became a massive hit Paul received criticism in the press for paying so little, so he sent each member a cheque for £200.
The song was a huge commercial success for Paul and the other members of Wings. In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 19th of November 1977 and reached Number One; it held the top spot for nine weeks. It spent twelve weeks in the Top Ten and a total of seventeen weeks on the UK chart.
” Mull of Kintyre ” went on to be the first single in the United Kingdom to sell over two million copies. It was to be the best-selling single of all-time in the UK, beating The Beatles single ” She Loves You ” which had the record up to that point.
Paul held the record until 1984 when ” Do They Know It’s Christmas? ” took over to be the best-selling single of all-time in the country. That was later beaten by Elton John and his tribute to Diana, the Princess of Wales, who died in 1997.
In the United States, the single was issued as a double A-side with ” Girls School “, receiving more airplay, the song reached number thirty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
