” My Baby Just Cares For Me ” is by Nina Simone ( Eunice Kathleen Waymon ), who was an American singer, songwriter, pianist and arranger. Simone performed a broad range of musical styles which included classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel and pop.
In 1954, she took the stage name ” Nina Simone “. First name ” Nina ” was from a nickname given to her by Chico, a boyfriend. ” Simone ” came from Simone Signoret, a French actress, whom she had seen in the movie Casque d’Or. Her debut album, Little Girl Blue, was released by record label Bethlehem Records on the 24th of June 1958. Nina sold the rights for the songs on the album to the label for $3,000; the deal eventually cost her royalty profits of more than a million dollars.
Nina settled in near Aix-en-Provence in Southern France and died on the 21st of April 2003 in her sleep at her home in Carry-le-Rouet, Bouches-du-Rhône. During her career, she recorded more than forty Albums.
The jazz standard, ” My Baby Just Cares For Me “, was written by Walter Donaldson with lyrics by Gus Kahn. Walter was an American songwriter who composed numerous hit songs of the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. His works have become standards and formed part of the Great American Songbook.
Gus Kahn was an American lyricist, in the 1920s, he contributed to many Broadway scores like Holka Polka (1925), Kitty’s Kisses (1926), Artists and Models (1927), Whoopee! (1928), and Show Girl (1929). Gus had a long friendship with composer Walter Donaldson. Their first piece of work through their partnership was the song ” My Buddy ” in 1922. The songwriting partners went on to compose over 100 songs together.
” My Baby Just Cares For Me ” was originally written for the 1930 film version of the musical comedy Whoopee! It became a signature tune for actor and performer Eddie Cantor who sang it in the movie.
Nina’s cover of the song was recorded and released in 1958 and features on her debut album, Little Girl Blue. The album, released on the 24th of June 1958, contains ” I Loves You, Porgy ” from George Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess. The song was the one that started Nina’s career. It was to be her only Billboard Top Twenty hit in the United States.
” My Baby Just Cares For Me ” remained a relatively obscure track until 1987, when Nina’s cover was used in a UK television commercial for Chanel No. 5 perfume. To take advantage of the exposure the ad was given to the song it was released as a single by Charly Records.
The accompanying music video was shot using claymation, which is a form of stop-motion animation using plasticine clay. The two main characters featured in the video are a singing cat in a club and the cat who is in love with her.
The video was directed by Peter Lord and produced by Aardman Animations, the British animation studio behind Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, which is the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film ever.
The song was a commercial success for Nina upon the re-release in 1987. In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 31st of October 1987 and reached a peak of number five. It spent two weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fifteen weeks on the UK chart. The single also made the Top Ten in several European countries and reached Number One in the Netherlands.
