My Coo Ca Choo Alvin Stardust
Song Title: My Coo Ca Choo
Artist: Alvin Stardust
Date of release: 1973
Description: ” My Coo Ca Choo ” is by Alvin Stardust ( Bernard William Jewry ), who was an English rock singer and stage actor. He started performing in the 60s as Shane Fenton and enjoyed a moderately successful career in the pre-Beatles era.
Between 1961-62 he had four singles reach the UK Top Forty. It was to be the 1970s when Bernard William Jewry would find fame. He has become more widely known as Alvin Stardust and under that stage name achieved seven UK Top Ten hits, which also included ” Pretend ” and ” I Feel Like Buddy Holly “. His way of holding the microphone and the black leather clothes helped Alvin to become instantly recognisable to fans.
” My Coo Ca Choo ” was written and produced by Peter Shelley. Peter is a British 1970s pop singer-songwriter who had hit singles in the United Kingdom with ” Gee Baby ” and ” Love Me Love My Dog “, the latter reached number three on the UK Singles Chart in 1975.
He was the original persona of Alvin Stardust, which later was used by Bernard William Jewry. In 1973 Peter co-founded the record label Magnet Records with Michael Levy, which went on to be the label for Alvin Stardust and one of the most successful independent labels of the 1970s.
The song was released in 1973 by record label Magnet Records ( Warner Bros. Records ) and taken from Alvin’s UK number four Album, The Untouchable, which was released on the 16th of March 1974.
Originally the song was sung by Peter Shelley under his glam rock creation, Alvin Stardust. Although Peter had previously performed as Alvin Stardust on Series eight of the British TV show Lift Off, he was caught off guard when the song entered the UK Singles Chart the following week.
He had no intention to perform as Alvin himself and decided that if the creation was to become a more permanent figure on the charts then there needed a ‘ face ‘ to play as Alvin Stardust. Looking around for someone to fit the bill, it was decided that Bernard William Jewry would become the creation of Alvin Stardust.
As the new incarnation of Alvin, Bernard performed on the British television music show Top of the Pops just as ” My Coo Ca Choo ” entered the Top Thirty of the UK Singles Chart. Once his creation had been established, Peter Shelley went on to write and produce a string of hits for Alvin Stardust.
” My Coo Ca Choo ” was a commercial success for Alvin. In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 3rd of November 1973 and reached a peak of number two. It spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-one weeks on the UK chart. The song also charted in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Norway.
