My Favourite Time of Year The Florin Street Band

Song Title: My Favourite Time of Year

Artist: The Florin Street Band

Date of release: 6th of December 2010

Description: ” My Favourite Time of Year ” is by The Florin Street Band, the English Victorian-themed band put together by the song’s writer Leigh Haggerwood in 2010.
The song was produced and mixed by Leigh with help from engineer and producer Tim Weidner. Tim is a Grammy award co-nominee who has worked with artists of many musical styles, including Seal, Mike Oldfield, John Legend, Tina Turner, Cher and LeAnn Rimes.
” My Favourite Time of Year ” was recorded at the World famous SARM Studios in Notting Hill, London. The studios were built inside a deconsecrated former church and are currently owned by Trevor Horn, who had such an influence on popular music in the 1980s that he has often been called ” The Man Who Invented the Eighties “.
Leigh Haggerwood is an established musician, composer, singer and songwriter. The idea for the song was born out of frustration that the Christmas UK chart of today lacks any type of traditional song, mostly being filled with The X Factor finalists and protest songs like Rage Against the Machine. The American rock band from Los Angeles, California had a Christmas Number One in 2009 with their single ” Killing In The Name “.
For this project Leigh put together the band by inviting his musician friends to work with him and found a session string section that had the ability to perform such a task.
To give the song that Christmas feel, Leigh approached The English Chamber Choir, who were more than happy to give their acclaimed expertise to the project. The English Chamber Choir is one of London’s leading vocal ensembles which is directed by Guy Protheroe. Since they founded the choir has performed at all the leading London venues and in front of Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
After a mammoth session lasting some 16 hours the song was completed, that however was just the start of the uphill climb Leigh had in front of him. Radio stations up and down the UK didn’t include ” My Favourite Time of Year ” on their playlists due to the single not being on a major record label.
Record companies didn’t back the song and so it was difficult to promote and gain public awareness. The song did go on to win the UK Songwriting Contest and get a small public response through social media with many people describing the song as a future classic.
The accompanying music video was directed by Nick Bartleet, the English commercials and content director has worked with Will Young, Pixie Lott and The Vamps. The location needed to be able to immerse the viewer into Victorian England and capture the essence of a Dickensian Christmas scene.
Leigh approached Blists Hill Victorian Town at Ironbridge, Shropshire in the UK. Blists Hill is an independent educational charity and working museum that recreates life in Victorian England. They renamed the Victorian street from the museum Florin Street N.W for the video.
The idea of the video was to show a Victorian working class man walking through the snow-covered streets enjoying the festivities. With the respected cinematographer John Perez on board ( who has worked with Coldplay, Beyoncé and Rihanna ) the atmosphere was set.
The video shoot took 12 hours to complete and involved over one hundred cast and crew. Also featured are the The Jackfield Band, which originated as a Fife and Drum Band back in 1893 and talented violinist Vaughan Jones dressed in Victorian costume playing Violin & solo fiddle.
” My Favourite Time of Year ” didn’t make the mainstream charts upon release, it did reach number 14 on the UK Indie Breakers Chart. In August of 2011, the United States Army Band arranged the song for their annual Christmas concert at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C.
The song was taken up by music TV networks like VH1 and in 2011 it was used as the theme to British tv network ITV for their annual charity event ” Text Santa “.
Gradually the song is gaining public awareness and growing in popularity in Scandinavia and the USA due to several music TV networks adding it to their seasonal playlists.
At the time of writing the video has been watched 3,737,970 times on YouTube.
