Description: ” My World ” is by the Bee Gees, who were a pop music group. Formed in 1958, the group was made up of Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The brothers were born on the Isle of Man, a small island between Great Britain and Ireland. Although an island just off the UK it is a self-governing crown dependency, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
They moved to Chorlton, Manchester, England, where they stayed until the late 1950s. The family then moved to Australia, where the Gibb brothers found success with their 12th single ” Spicks and Specks “. In January 1967 they moved back to the United Kingdom and teamed up with producer Robert Stigwood, who began promoting the group to a Worldwide audience.
In 1997 the brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Bee Gees have sold in excess of 200 Million records Worldwide, making the group one the World’s best-selling artists of all time.
Maurice died at the age of 53 in January 2003, due to complications of a twisted intestine. Robin died at the age of 62 on the 20th of May 2012 in London from liver and kidney failure. Barry is the only family member left, he still records and tours. In May 2004 all three brothers were awarded the Commander in the Order of the British Empire ( CBE ) for services to music.
” My World ” was written by the Bee Gees with production for the single by Robert Stigwood. Robert was an Australian-born producer, film producer and impresario. Although he is best remembered for managing the Bee Gees and British rock Supergroup Cream, he was also involved in some of the most popular theatrical productions like Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar.
In addition to his work in the theatre, Robert was involved in the successful film productions of Saturday Night Fever and Grease, the 1978 American musical romantic comedy starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
The song was released on the 14th of January 1972 by record labels Polydor ( Universal Music Group ) in the United Kingdom and Atco ( Warner Music Group ) in the United States and Canada. Although at the time released as a non-Album single, in 1973 it was included on the Album Best of Bee Gees, Volume 2. The compilation Album of hits was released in August 1973 and again by record label Rhino Entertainment ( Warner Music Group ) in November 2008.
The first Best of Bee Gees Album focused mainly on the hit singles that charted in either the United Kingdom or United States, the follow up Album, Best of Bee Gees, Volume 2, was made up of cuts from the first.
Also featured on Volume 2 were one song from Horizontal, Idea and Odessa, which were early Bee Gees Album’s. It is really a collection of their hit singles from late 1969 to 1972 with additional cuts from their earlier Albums.
” My World ” was written by the Bee Gees when they were backstage of a TV show called The Golden Shot. The game show was aired on the British commercial network ITV between the 1st of July 1967 and the 13th of April 1975.
Maurice Gibb said of the song ” Whether something is a soft ballad or an uptempo thing, we would record it if we thought it was going to make a good single .” By the 13th of October 1971 the group had recorded the song at the IBC Studios in London.
The song features Barry Gibb on lead vocals and guitar, Robin Gibb on lead vocals, Maurice Gibb on backing vocals, bass, piano and guitar, Geoff Bridgford on drums and Alan Kendall on guitar. It was the last single the Bee Gees released featuring drummer Geoff Bridgford, who left in March that year.
” My World ” was a commercial success for the Bee Gees. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1972, it spent 8 weeks on the chart there. It also reached number 15 on both the Cash Box and Record World charts.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 29th of January 1972 and reached a peak of number 16. It spent 5 weeks in the top twenty and a total of 9 weeks on the UK chart.
