Production for the single was by DJ Mustard, Twice as Nice, Frank Dukes and Kuk Harrell. ” Needed Me ” was released to the urban radio stations on the 30th of March 2016 by record label Roc Nation ( founded by JAY Z in 2008 ) and taken from the Number One Billboard 200 Chart album, Anti.
Recording of the song took place at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles. The studio has been used by many well-known artists including Michael Jackson, Shakira, Justin Timberlake and Madonna. Westlake Recording Studios is home to Studio A, which has gone down in history as the studio where Michael Jackson recorded Thriller, the biggest selling album of all time.
It was on the 15th of September, 2014, that producer DJ Mustard confirmed that he and Rihanna had worked on a song for her eighth album, Anti. He said ” We haven’t got our club record just yet, but we have a ballad that I really like and that she likes too. ”
He had worked on fifty songs in an attempt to get them included on the album, ” Needed Me ” was one of the final songs that he’d worked on that was included.
The song is described as ” mellowish ” with a trap-flavoured electro-R&B feel and ” trippy, trappy production “. Lyrically it discusses romantic rejection, with the lyrics being noted for changing stereotypical gender roles.
According to Rihanna sampled Y.G’s single ” I’m Good “. Rapper Y.G ( Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson ) released ” Toot It and Boot It ” ( ft Ty Dolla Sign ) as his debut single in 2010, the song reached number sixty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
” Needed Me ” was well received by music critics. The consequence of Sound’s David Sackllah commented that it was the best track on the album, calling the song ” the ultimate kiss-off to an ex” and “masterful.”
Writing for Idolator, Bianca Gracie gave praise for the song; she wrote that the song was an ” addictive track [that] has all the potential to become every female’s anthem. ”
The accompanying music video was directed by Harmony Korine, the American film director and screenwriter who is best known for writing Kids and Spring Breakers, the 2013 American satirical crime action drama film which he directed.
Aisha Harris of Slate and Jamieson Cox of The Verge both agreed that the video was inspired by Spring Breakers, Aisha Harris said of the video ” it’s difficult to tell if this video is trying to say anything particularly meaningful or is just an example of empty exploitation. Maybe it’s a bit of both, but one thing is for sure: It’s impossible to look away from. ”
” Needed Me ” was a commercial success for Rihanna. In the United States, the song reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, it spent sixteen weeks in the Top Ten and became her 29th Top Ten single release there.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 18th of February 2016 and reached number thirty-eight. It spent a total of twenty-eight weeks on the UK chart.
