” Never Be the Same ” is by Jessica Mauboy ( Jessica Hilda Mauboy ), the Australian R&B and pop singer, songwriter and actress. Jessica found fame after coming runner-up in the fourth season of Australian Idol in 2006.
After releasing The Journey in 2007, a live album of performances from Jessica’s time in the top twelve on the show, and a short time as a member of Young Divas, she released her debut album Been Waiting a year later.
The single ” Burn ” went on to become Jessica’s first Number One single in Australia. In 2009 the album became the second highest-selling in the Country, being awarded 2x Platinum by Australian Recording Industry Association ( ARIA ).
” Never Be the Same ” was written and produced by Anthony Egizii, David Musumeci and Jessica Mauboy. Anthony and David are behind the songwriting and production company DNA, formed in Australia in 2004.
Along with Jessica, they have worked with a variety of international artists including Geri Halliwell, Ricky Martin, The Veronicas, Guy Sebastian, The Saturdays, Samantha Jade and Delta Goodrem.
The song was released on the 7th of March 2014 by record label Sony Music Entertainment Australia ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken as the fourth single from Jessica’s third album, Beautiful.
The album entered the ARIA Albums Chart at number three where it peaked; it was to be her highest-charting album to date. It was awarded Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association and earned Jessica two nominations, the Album of the Year and Best Female Artist, at the 2014 ARIA Music Awards.
The mid-tempo pop and R&B ballad, ” Never Be the Same ” and was the last song written for her album. Lyrically the song is about ” the confusion of growing up and the fact that changes in life are inevitable “.
In an interview with the Australian newspaper, The Canberra Times, Jessica said the song was her favourite track on the whole album. She said that the song ” tells of a moment I had about doing something that is regretful but at the same time trying to race and fix it before it [was] too late! “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Lawrence Lim who produced Sinful in 2016 for Mat Zo feat. I See MONSTAS. He was Executive Producer for Different Drum by Sioux City released in 2016 and Skank by Lucky Charmes feat. Wiley in 2015.
The video was filmed over two days in March 2014, where scenes featuring the beach were shot on location in Manly, New South Wales, Australia. Manly is a beach-side suburb of northern Sydney.
Manly was named by Captain Arthur Phillip for the indigenous people who lived there. The British Royal Navy officer went on to become the first Governor of New South Wales assisting in the foundation of the British penal colony there that later became Sydney, Australia.
The actress, Miah Madden features in the video as a young Jessica. Miah is best known for the 2012 Australian musical comedy-drama film The Sapphires. She also appeared in The Gods of Wheat Street and The Darkside.
” Never Be the Same ” was a commercial success for Jessica. The single debuted at number twenty-one on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. A week later it climbed to reach number sixteen, staying at that number for two consecutive weeks.
After six weeks on the chart the song reached a peak of number six, becoming her seventh Top Ten single in the country. The song sold over 70,000 copies and was certified Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association ( ARIA ).
