Never gonna give you up Rick Astley

Song Title: Never gonna give you up

Artist: Rick Astley

Date of release: 1987

Description: ” Never gonna give you up ” is by Rick Astley, the British singer. Written and produced by the successful song-writing trio Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, it was to be Rick’s first hit single.
The song was the first to be taken from his debut Album ” Whenever You Need Somebody ” which was released in 1987.
” Never gonna give you up ” was inspired by a woman Pete Waterman had been dating for three years. Staying with Pete at the time Rick witnessed a three-hour phone call between Pete and the woman, Rick said ” You’re never gonna give her up “. The seed of an idea for the song was sown and after some tweaking, Aitken and Waterman had come up with ” Never gonna give you up “.
The song was to be hugely successful with a number one placement in 25 countries, it went on to become the signature tune for Rick.
In the United Kingdom Rick scored a number one in 1987 with the song where it stayed on top for five weeks and went on to be the best-selling single of that year.
In 1988 Rick also enjoyed success with ” Never gonna give you up ” in the United States, the song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 where it stayed for 2 weeks.
In 1988 Rick was nominated and won the Best British Single at the Brit Awards. Not all awards would have been welcomed by Rick though, in 2004 ” Never gonna give you up ” was voted number 28 out of 50 for VH1’s Most awesomely Bad Songs Ever chart.
The music video was directed by Simon West, the English film director. The video involves Rick Astley singing in different locations around West London England which includes an abandoned club.
The bartender which was played by Clive Clarke from the Top of the Pops dance troupe Zoo, notices Rick singing and after a while joins in with
acrobatic moves including a flip. There is talk that Clive had a hangover at the time and mistimed the flip which resulted on him landing on his head. Without injury he attempted the flip and second time and pulled it off.
