Army of Lovers became as well known for their costumes as they did for their music. The group was named after a German documentary called Armee der Liebenden oder Aufstand der Perverse ( Army of Lovers or Revolt of the Perverts ), the film, directed by Rosa von Praunheim, was released in 1979. The documentary was filmed mainly in San Francisco, in northern California. It focused on gay activism in the United States during the 1970s.
Alexander Bard is known to masterminded the group with Jean-Pierre Barda concentrating more on the vocal lead. Although the successful Eurodance group is best known for their hit single ” Crucified “, they have produced four studio Albums, six compilation Albums and twenty-seven singles and sold over seven million albums worldwide.
” Obsession ” was written by Alexander Bard and Anders Wollbeck ( Anders Wilhelm Axel Wollbeck ). Anders is a Swedish songwriter and producer. In addition to his work with the Army of Lovers, he has worked with Alcazar, Midi, Maxi & Efti, Vacuum, Rachel Stevens, Monrose, Tarja Turunen, Cinema Bizarre and Vengaboys, Kayo, Pernilla Wahlgren and Ankie Bagger.
Production for the single was by Alexander Bard, Anders Wollbeck and Per Adebratt. The song was released in 1991 by record label Ton Son Ton and taken from the group’s second Album, Massive Luxury Overdose.
The Album was released in 1991 and features some of their biggest sellers including ” Crucified “, which reached Number One in twenty-nine countries. The Album was a commercial success. Worldwide sales exceeded two million copies with sales of 70,000 copies in Sweden alone and were certified Gold in Austria.
The accompanying music video was directed by Fredrik Boklund and produced by Martin Persson. The video is notable for the absence of La Camilla’s tiara; it’s one of the few videos that she is seen without it.
” Obsession ” was a commercial success for the Army of Lovers. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number eleven on the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart and spent eleven weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom ” Obsession ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 28th of December 1991 and reached a peak of number sixty-seven. The song spent one week on the UK chart.
It also was successful in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden, where it peaked inside the Top Ten.
