” Oh Julie ” is by Shakin’ Stevens ( Michael Barratt ), the British rock and roll singer and songwriter. Shakin’ Stevens is a Platinum-selling singer-songwriter, who in the 1980s was the United Kingdom’s biggest-selling singles artist.
It was in the 1960s when Shakin’ Stevens began his recording and performing career, but wasn’t until 1980 that he tasted real commercial success.
The song was written by Shakin’ Stevens with production for the single by Stuart Colman. Stuart is an English musician, record producer and broadcaster. During his career, he has worked with many musicians like Billy Fury, The Blasters, Cliff Richard, Phil Everly, Alvin Stardust, The Jets, The Inmates and Little Richard.
” Oh Julie ” was released in January 1982 by record label Epic Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and features on the album, Give Me Your Heart Tonight.
In the book, 1000 UK Number One Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh; Shakin’ Stevens explained how the song came about ” The idea just came to me while we were rehearsing in Nomis Studios, in London, in January 1982. I said to Geraint Watkins, my keyboards player at the time, ‘bring your squeeze-box I tomorrow, I’ve got an idea for a song’. I wanted to write something with a Cajun feel, and I think we got pretty near to that, although these days when we do it on stage, we give it even more of a Louisiana feel “.
The song’s most distinctive aspect is the use of a Cajun accordion. Cajun music has an infectious beat and often places the accordion at the centre. In the early days, the fiddle would usually have been the centre instrument, gradually the Cajun accordion, also known as a squeezebox, took centre stage.
The Cajun accordion used on ” Oh Julie ” was played by Geraint Watkins. Born near Caerphilly, Wales, the rock and roll pianist and accordionist has worked with the likes of Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney and Roy St. John.
” Oh Julie ” was a commercial success for Shakin’ Stevens. In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of January 1982 and peaked at Number One, it held the top spot for one week. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart.
The song also charted in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden.
