One for Sorrow Steps

” One for Sorrow ” is by Steps, the British dance-pop group. The song was written by Mark Topham, Karl Twigg and Lance Ellington; the latter has worked with artists like Sting, George Michael, Michael Jackson and Robbie Williams.
The song was produced by Mark Topham, Karl Twigg and Pete Waterman, Pete is better known for launching the career of Kylie Minogue during the 80s and as part of one of the most commercially successful songwriting and production teams in the industry.
” One for Sorrow ” was to be the first of the group’s singles to reach the top five in the United Kingdom, Steps had now firmly cemented their place as a new ABBA type group.
Many people commented that the song sounds like the ABBA hit single ” Winner Takes It All ” which was released on the 21st of July 1980 from the album, Super Trouper.
The group’s previous single ” Last Thing On My Mind ” featured solos by Claire Richards, Faye Tozer and Lisa Scott-Lee. For this song only Claire sings lead, the other two girls add harmonies with boy members Ian ‘ H ‘ Watkins and Lee Latchford-Evans join for the chorus.
This approach to the distribution of vocals caused tension within the group, after Steps reformed in 2011, it was revealed that after the release of ” One for Sorrow ” the other members were unhappy at being pushed into the background in favour of Claire.
A remixed version of the song was used in the 1999 romantic teen comedy, Drive Me Crazy, which was based on the novel How I Created My Perfect Prom Date, by Todd Strasser.
After the song was remixed and used in the film, Steps made it into the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart in 1999 and reached number thirty-eight, it spent a total of five weeks on the chart there.
Outside of the United States, Steps had a hit in the United Kingdom with ” One for Sorrow “. The single entered the UK Singles chart at number two and remained on the chart for eleven weeks.
