” One of Us ” is by Joan Osborne ( Joan Elizabeth Osborne ), the American singer and songwriter. The song was written by Eric Bazilian, the American singer, songwriter and producer. He is best known for being one of the founding members of The Hooters; the American rock band played live at The Wall Concert in Berlin in 1990.
” One of Us ” was produced by Rick Chertoff. The five-time Grammy-nominated record producer has worked with artists like Cyndi Lauper on her ” Girls Just Want To Have Fun ” single and Sophie B. Hawkins on her song ” Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover “.
The song was first released by record labels Blue Gorilla Records and Mercury on the 21st of February 1995 and again on the 28th of December the same year. ” One of Us ” was taken from Joan’s debut album, Relish, which was nominated for Album Of The Year at the 38th Grammys.
Lyrically the song looks at different expressions of people’s belief in God, Joan asks the listener questions on how they relate to God, Such as ” If God had a name, what would it be? ” and ” If God had a face, what would it look like? “.
The content of the song caused some people offence, various Catholic forums questioned the lyrics and believed it to be offensive because of the lyrics including ” Just a slob like one of us? “. Although some took the song to be almost blasphemous in the content, others saw the song a pro-Christian.
Joan had a massive hit with the song. It was nominated for three Grammys and used as the theme song for Joan of Arcadia, an American fantasy tv drama which ran on the CBS network until it was cancelled in 2005.
Sales of the single were good, in the United States the song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent twenty-two weeks on the chart there.
On the 26th of January 1996, it was certified Gold by The Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) with US sales of 500,000.
Outside of the United States, the song reached Number One in several countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada and Sweden.
In the United Kingdom ” One of Us ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 10th of February 1996 and reached a peak of number six. The song spent three weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart.
In 2007 VH1 ranked the song at number fifty-four on their Greatest Songs of the 90s Chart. It was listed at number ten on the network 40 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 90s.
Despite the success of both the song and the album, Joan couldn’t follow-up on the success that the song gave her and is considered to be a one-hit wonder.
