” Only Love Can Break Your Heart ” is by Saint Etienne, the English alternative dance band from London, England. The group formed in 1990 and consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs.
Former music journalists and childhood friends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs had initially planned to use different singers as the lead. Saint Etienne’s first album, Foxbase Alpha, used this concept.
It was when they worked with Sarah Cracknell on ” Nothing Can Stop Us “, their third single released in 1991, that they made the decision to work with her on a permanent basis. Sarah Cracknell has written or co-written many of the band’s songs.
” Only Love Can Break Your Heart ” was written by Neil Young, the Canadian singer-songwriter, musician and producer, Neil is also a director and screenwriter. He wrote the protest song ” Ohio “, recorded and released by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in June 1970.
The song is about The Kent State shootings, also called the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre, which took place at the Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, on the 4th of May 1970. Twenty-nine guardsmen from the Ohio National Guard fired in the region of 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds. The result was the death of four students and the wounding of nine others.
It has been said that initially the song was written for Graham Nash after he split from Joni Mitchell. The single, released in October 1970, peaked at number thirty-three on the Billboard Chart, becoming Neil’s first Top Forty hit as a solo artist.
In January 1990 Saint Etienne recorded a cover version of ” Only Love Can Break Your Heart “. The song was released by record label Heavenly ( a London-based independent record label ) in May of that year. It featured on the band’s debut album, Foxbase Alpha. The vocals for the song were provided by Moira Lambert as Sarah Cracknell hadn’t joined the group as a permanent member at that time.
The accompanying music video was shot in mostly black and white and features a miming Lucy from early 90s pop trio Golden, who released a record called Anglo American, which failed to chart. The vocalist Moira Lambert refused to appear in the video. There is another version of the video, in that version, Sarah Cracknell mimes and shows the band entering a cinema in a small French town where they see themselves in a movie.
” Only Love Can Break Your Heart ” was a commercial success for Saint Etienne. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number ninety-seven in 1992; it was to be the band’s only chart entry there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 7th of July 1990 and reached a peak of number thirty-nine. It spent a total of five weeks on the chart there.
