A new BBC tv show called The Great British Song Contest was used to decide the United Kingdom’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. On the 1st of March 1996 the qualifying round was broadcast by the BBC, the four songs with the highest amount of telephone votes would make the final.
Gina G was the clear winner with the British public casting 113,576 votes, a clear 71,785 votes in front of the second placed ” I gave you everything ” by the British boy band known as Code red.
So in 1996 Gina G was picked to be the United Kingdom’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Due to the interest in participating in the contest, all the countries ( except Norway ) had to present their entry as an audio only for the semi’s held in late March.
In this round Gina G’s entry was to come third with 153 points, at the final which was held in Oslo Spektrum in the city of Oslo, Norway, ” Ooh aah just a little bit ” finished 8th with 77 points scored.
The now iconic dress worn by Gina G when she performed the song was custom-made originally by Paco Rabanne for the singer Cher. She left it unused at the offices of Warner Bros Records, there Gina came across it and had it shortened just for the contest.
Along with what could really be considered a successful UK Eurovision Song Contest entry, Gina G also went on to have chart success with ” Ooh aah just a little bit “.
The song entered the UK charts at number 6 and climbed to number 2 , some weeks later the song moved to take the number one slot. The song was to spend one week at number one and a total of 15 weeks on the UK charts.
A chart position of 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 gave Gina G the fourth most successful Eurovision Song Contest song on the US charts, just behind Vicky Leandros ( Vicky ) “Love Is Blue” (1968), ABBA “Waterloo” (1974) and Spanish band Mocedades “Eres tú” (1974).
” Ooh aah just a little bit ” was nominated in 1997 for Best Dance Recording at the following years 1998 Grammy Awards.
