Paper Planes MIA

” Paper Planes ” by M.I.A. the UK rapper, the song was taken from her second album, Kala, which was released in 2007.
Written by M.I.A. and Diplo the American rapper, DJ, songwriter and producer, as the track uses the sample of ” Straight To Hell ” by the Clash they also receive co-writing credits. Many speculate the chorus of ” Paper Planes ” is based on the song ” Rump Shaker ” from 1992. However, this remains pure speculation, and no credit has been given to Wreckx-N-Effect.
The song’s focus is a type of rap ballad, written as a downtempo, with a melody in a folk style, making ” Paper Planes ” less of a dance orientated track than others on the album.
Once released the song won acclaim from many influential music critics and magazines, Rolling Stone ranked the song highly as one of the best songs of the year.
Along with critical acclaim, ” Paper Planes ” was also a commercial success for M.I.A. with chart positions in the Top Twenty of many countries including Belgium, Denmark, Canada, the United Kingdom, where it reached number nineteen. In the United States, the song had a chart position of four on the Billboard Hot 100.
Released as a download in 2007 by XL Recordings and Interscope Records, ” Paper Planes ” became XL Recordings best-selling single with sales approximately 4 million in the United States alone.
Along with the critical acclaim and strong sales ” Paper Planes ” was also nominated for Record of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
For the video M.I.A is seen with friends on the streets of New York and selling sandwiches to the locals with paper planes flying overhead.
M.I.A regularly features the song in concert tours and has been doing so since the record’s release back in 2007.
