” Pocketful of Sunshine ” is by Natasha Bedingfield ( Natasha Anne Bedingfield ), the British singer and songwriter.
Natasha released her debut album, Unwritten, in 2004. The album, influenced by R&B music became an international success with sales of over 2.3 million worldwide.
She received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for ” Unwritten “, the title track from the album and at the 2005 and 2006 Brit Awards Natasha was nominated for Best British Female Artist.
” Pocketful of Sunshine ” was was written and produced by John Shanks, with additional writing by Natasha Bedingfield and Danielle Brisebois. John Shanks is an American writer and producer of modern rock music.
His first success as a writer came in the early 1990s with tracks for Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker and Tuck & Patti. He has since written tracks for Take That, The Corrs, Sheryl Crow, Bon Jovi, Goo Goo Dolls and Delta Goodrem.
As a producer, he has worked with a diverse range of artists of all genres from Nelly Furtado, Van Halen and Katherine Jenkins to Pixie Lott and Miley Cyrus.
The song’s additional writer, Danielle Brisebois, is an American producer, singer-songwriter and former child actress. She is best known for her role as Stephanie Mills on the sitcoms, All in the Family and its spin-off Archie Bunker’s Place.
In the latter part of the 90s, she became a member of the New Radicals, who had a hit single with ” You Get What You Give “. Their only album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, sold a million copies in the United States and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ).
” Pocketful of Sunshine ” was released on the 15th of January 2008 by record label Epic ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken as the second single from Natasha’s second album of the same name.
The album was first released as N.B. in the United Kingdom on the 30th of April 2007, later it was re-packaged and released on the 22nd of January 2008 in the United States and Canada under the name Pocketful of Sunshine.
Lyrically the song is about escapism and finding a peaceful place when situations become difficult. Well received by music critics, many of which said the song was the highlight of the album and some praising it for its bright and lively summer feel.
The accompanying music video, released on the 15th of April 2008 to music video station MTV, was directed by Alan Ferguson. Alan is an American music video director who also uses the name Sky Dalton, which some of his work is credited. He has worked with a variety of artists including Beyoncé, Jay Z, Nelly Furtado, Katy Perry and Tiësto.
” Pocketful of Sunshine ” was a commercial success for Natasha. In the United States, the song debuted at number sixty-five and reached a peak of number five on the Billboard Hot 100, spending thirty-five weeks on the chart there.
It also reached number three on the Adult Contemporary, Number One on the Dance Club Songs, four on the Mainstream Top 40, five on the Pop 100 and three on the Adult Pop Songs charts.
Following the 2010 international release of Natasha’s third studio album, Strip Me Away, the song was included in the album’s track listing, the track was then selected for international release.
It charted in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland. The song was not released in the United Kingdom.
