” Red Red Wine ” is by UB40, the British reggae-pop band. The song was originally written by Neil Diamond the American singer-songwriter and was a hit for him in 1969 reaching number sixty-two on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
This version was produced by UB40 and Ray ‘ Pablo ‘ Falconer, who was a reggae producer from the city of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
” Red Red Wine ” was covered by reggae singer Tony Tribe and Jimmy James & the Vagabonds just after Neil Diamond released his original.
While Neil’s version only made it to number sixty-two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, the cover by Tony Tribe reached number forty-six, and Jimmy James & the Vagabonds made it to number thirty-six.
It has often been wrongly thought that Bob Marley himself covered the song. However, he never recorded a version.
UB40 recorded their cover of the song in 1983 for their cover versions album, Labour Of Love, after hearing the Tony Tribe sing the song.
According to UB40, they only knew of the Tony Tribe version, although the credit for the writer was ” Diamond “, the group didn’t realise this meant Neil Diamond.
UB40 took the song and produced a more up-tempo reggae style which lightened the feel of the song from the original acoustic ballad.
For the UB40 version, group member Astro opens the song with rapping ( toasted in Jamaican music ) where he says ” Red Red Wine, you make me feel so fine, You keep me rocking all of the time. ”
However, this was edited out for the 1983 release but included when the song was re-released five years later for the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert.
” Red Red Wine ” was to be a commercial success for UB40. In the United States, UB40’s version reached a peak of number thirty-four in March 1984 and remained on the chart for 100 weeks there.
The song was rereleased in 1988 with the earlier omitted Astro opening for the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert, this time the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Outside of the United States, ” Red Red Wine ” reached the top spot on the charts in Ireland, Netherlands and New Zealand and made the top five in Australia, Canada and Austria.
In the United Kingdom, the single reached Number One, holding the position for three weeks. The song spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fifteen weeks on the UK chart.
