” Relax,Take It Easy ” is by Mika ( Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr ), the British singer and songwriter. The song was written by Mika and Nick Van Eede; Nick wrote the power ballad ” (I just) Died In Your Arms ” for the band Cutting Crew in 1986.
Production for the single was by Greg Wells, the Canadian musician, record producer and songwriter who has worked with the likes of Elton John, Adele and Pharrell Williams.
” Relax,Take It Easy ” was released by record label Casablanca Records in June 2006 and taken from Mika’s debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion.
Originally the song was released by Mika in June 2006 but failed to chart the first time around, after ” Grace Kelly ” made it to Number One, the song was re-released in 2007.
Mika uses the melody from the Cutting Crew’s Billboard chart-topping single ” (I just) Died In Your Arms “, the song uses a funky guitar riff overlayed by a catchy chorus.
In an interview with the British newspaper, The Sun, in February 2007, Mika explained the story behind the hit single.
He said ” I always wanted to write a dance song that wasn’t a really full dance track, that felt organic. So when I came into producing ‘Relax’ I made sure that most of the sounds we used were actually made by real instruments. We used some great session musicians who had worked with Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. And we picked up the strangest pedal combinations to get all these weird sounds. It’s really effective – you can’t tell if it’s a full dance track or really laid-back. It feels a bit weird electronically. The organic-ness gives a more classic field to it. So it was one of the harder tracks for me to produce, but also the most rewarding. ”
Music critics loved the song and gave positive reviews. Entertainment Weekly’s Beth Johnson praised the song and wrote that it is ” a Bee Gees-ish shout-out to Frankie Goes to Hollywood. ”
Reviewer, Fraser McAlpine on the BBC Radio 1 The Chart blog said ” It’s a moving song, not in the sense that it makes you well up with tears but in the sense that it’s going somewhere, without actually getting there within the song itself; it’s the journey, not the arrival. ”
” Relax,Take It Easy ” was a success for Mika. In the United States, the song peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart, where it spent twenty weeks on the chart.
Outside of the United States, the single entered the UK Singles Chart in the United Kingdom on the 20th of January 2007 and peaked at number eighteen. It spent two weeks in the Top Twenty and a total of twenty-one weeks on the UK chart.
