Relax, take it easy Mika

Song Title: Relax, take it easy

Artist: Mika

Date of release: June 2006 (original) December 2007 (re-release)

Description: ” Relax, take it easy ” is by Mika ( Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr ), the British singer and songwriter. The song was written by Mika and Nick Van Eede, Nick wrote the power ballad ” (I just) Died in your arms ” for the band Cutting Crew in 1986.
Production for the single was by Greg Wells, the Canadian musician, record producer and songwriter who has worked with the likes of Elton John, Adele and Pharrell Williams.
” Relax, take it easy ” was released by record label Casablanca Records in June 2006 and taken from Mika’s debut Album ” Life in cartoon motion “.
Originally the song was released by Mika in June 2006 but failed to chart upon the first release, after ” Grace Kelly ” grabbed the number one slot the song was re-released in 2007.
Mika uses the melody from the Cutting Crew’s Billboard number one single ” (I just) Died in your arms “, the song uses a funky guitar riff overlayed by a catchy chorus.
In an interview with the British newspaper the Sun in February 2007, Mika explained the story behind the hit single.
He said ” I always wanted to write a dance song that wasn’t a really full dance track, that felt organic. So when I came into producing ‘Relax’ I made sure that most of the sounds we used were actually made by real instruments. We used some great session musicians who had worked with Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. And we picked up the strangest pedal combinations to get all these weird sounds. It’s really effective – you can’t tell if it’s a full dance track or really laid-back. It feels a bit weird electronically. The organic-ness gives a more classic field to it. So it was one of the harder tracks for me to produce, but also the most rewarding.”
Music critics loved the song and gave positive reviews. Entertainment Weekly’s Beth Johnson praised the song and wrote that it is ” a Bee Gees-ish shout-out to Frankie Goes to Hollywood “.
Reviewer Fraser McAlpine on the BBC Radio 1 The Chart blog said ” It’s a moving song, not in the sense that it makes you well up with tears but in the sense that it’s going somewhere, without actually getting there within the song itself; it’s the journey, not the arrival “.
” Relax, take it easy ” was a successful song for Mika, in the United States the song peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart, it spent 20 weeks on that chart.
Outside of the United States the song entered the United Kingdom chart on the 20th of January 2007 and peaked at number 18, the song spent 2 weeks in the top twenty and a total of 21 weeks on the UK chart.
