Respectable Mel and Kim

” Respectable ” is by Mel and Kim, who were a British pop duo. Born in Hackney, East London, the duo consisted of sisters Melanie and Kim Appleby.
Although a song called ” System ” was intended to be released as their first single, both Mel and Kim and the producers were unhappy with the track, and so it became the B-side to their new debut release, ” Showing Out ( Get Fresh at the Weekend ) “.
The duo’s new debut reached number three on the UK Singles Chart 1986 and became a minor hit in the United States, where it peaked at number seventy-eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The single did reach the top of the Billboard Dance Chart there.
Mel and Kim became celebrities in Europe, especially in their native country of Britain. Known for combining urban streetwear with high fashion, they had regular guest appearances on TV shows.
” Respectable ” was written to show the youthful, streetwise sensibilities of the sisters and their East End London roots. The lyrics were built around a pop/Chicago House sound with an excessive amount of vocal effects. The result was at the time, a fresh assault on the pop mainstream. The song quickly became popular on dance floors the world over.
In 1988 it was confirmed that Melanie had been diagnosed with cancer. She died at the age of 23 from pneumonia, which as she was weakened by chemotherapy, proved fatal. In the same year, Mel and Kim were nominated for a Brit Award for Best British Breakthrough Act.
After her sister’s death, Kim began a solo career. She had two UK Singles Chart Top Ten hits with the UK number two ” Don’t Worry ” in 1990 and ” G.L.A.D. “, which reached number ten on the same chart in 1991.
” Respectable ” was written and produced by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Stock Aitken Waterman, also known as SAW is a British songwriting and record producing trio made up of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. The trio enjoyed success in the latter part of the 80s and early part of the 90s.
Stock, Aitken and Waterman are one of the most successful songwriting and producing teams of all time. The songwriters and producers had more than 100 UK top forty hit singles; their earnings are estimated to be around $104 million. Stock Aitken Waterman have notched up sales somewhere in the region of 40 million records.
The song was released on the 18th of February 1987 by record labels Supreme ( Universal Music Group ) and Atlantic ( Warner Music Group ) and taken from the duo’s first and only studio album, F.L.M.
The album, released on the 13th of April 1987, was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) and spent twenty-five weeks on the UK Albums Chart. All the tracks featured on F.L.M were written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. The album also charted in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.
” Respectable ” was a commercial success for Mel and Kim. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart as a remix in 1987, spending eleven weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the seventh of March 1987 and peaked at Number One, holding the top spot for one week. It spent seven weeks in the top ten and a total of sixteen weeks on the UK chart.
