Return of the Mack Mark Morrison



” Return of the Mack ” is by Mark Morrison, the British hip hop and R&B recording artist. Mark was born in Hanover ( also spelt Hannover ), the capital and biggest city in the Lower Saxony state of West Germany.
His first official release was in 1993 with a song called ” Where Is Our Love ” which he released through Joe’Mel, his private label.
The song was written by Mark Morrison, Phil Chill, Chuckii Booker, Gerald Levert, C.J. Anthony, Adrian Belew, Chris Frantz, Steven Stanley, Tina Weymouth ( who wasn’t credited ).
Production for the single was by Mark Morrison and Phil Chill. Phil also worked as one of the producers on Mark’s debut album.
” Return of the Mack ” was released on the 18th of March 1996 by record labels Mack Life Records in the United Kingdom and Atlantic Records in the United States; the song was taken from Mark’s debut album of the same name.
The album reached number seventy-six on the Billboard 200 Chart in the United States and went on to be awarded a certified platinum disc by the RIAA ( Recording Industry Association of America ).
In the United Kingdom, it made its debut and peaked at number four, spending thirty-eight weeks on the chart and was certified platinum by the BPI ( British Phonographic Industry ). The album has notched up sales of three million copies to date.
Mark used a sample from Tom Tom Club’s second single from 1981 ” Genius of Love ” as the beat; the Tom Tom Club sample was one of the most used rhythm tracks of the 80s. In 1982 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five used it for their single ” It’s Nasty “. In 1995 Mariah Carey used the sample for her worldwide hit ” Fantasy “.
Also sampled by Mark was Chuckii Booker’s 1992 ” Games “, which reached number sixty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The American Platinum-selling hip-hop duo The Luniz also sampled ” Games ” for their 1995 single ” Playa Hater “.
In their book, 1000 UK #1 Hits, Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh interviewed Mark about ” Return of the Mack “, he said ” When I wrote that song, it was all about my moving from the negative to the positive. And that’s how it turned out. Within the space of a year, I went from the lowest point of my life to return as The Mack and move forward to what’s become the highest point of my life “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Jake Nava and filmed around East London. Jake is a British director who has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Beyoncé, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Shakira and P!nk.
” Return of the Mack ” was a commercial success for Mark. In the United States, the song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997 and remained for forty weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of March 1996 and reached Number One where it spent two weeks at the top. It spent twelve weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-seven weeks on the UK chart.
