Return to innocence Enigma

Song Title: Return to innocence

Artist: Enigma

Date of release: 4 January 1994

Description: ” Return to innocence ” by Enigma formed in 1990 as a New Age music project by Michael Cretu, David Fairstein and Frank Peterson.
This song was released in 1993 and taken from the group’s second Album ” The Cross of Changes “.

A huge commercial success the track went on to reach the number one slot in over 10 countries. Despite many number one positions on charts across the World, ” Return to innocence ” missed the number one slot in the UK making number 3 and a number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Vocals for the track were provided by Andreas Harde which sets the feel for the song in a melodic way, while the line ” That’s not the beginning of the end, that’s the return to yourself, the return to innocence ” is provided by Sandra the former wife of producer Michael Cretu.

Added to the mix is Amis chants, used in repetition at the opening of the song. This chant which was sampled from a song called ” Jubilant Drinking Song ” by Taiwan Aboriginal people The Amis ( Taiwan’s largest tribal group ). This was actually used without permission of the singers Kuo Ying-nan and Kuo Hsiu-chu. In 1988 during a cultural exchange program in Paris they recorded a CD, the producer of Enigma, Michael Cretu took a sample from that CD and also sampled ” When the Levee Breaks ” a Led Zepplin track to use on ” Return to innocence “.

Of course the lawsuits followed once singers Kuo Ying-nan and Kuo Hsiu-chu realised, the suit also included Virgin Records along with other recording companies for the use without permission. The case never actually reached court but was settled outside for an undisclosed sum and all later releases contained a credit to the two original singers along with royalty payments.

Michael Cretu later stated that he believed the recording was in the public domain and not subject to copyright and he hadn’t intended any form of copyright violation.
