Rhythm of the Night DeBarge

” Rhythm of the Night ” is by DeBarge, who was an American musical group mostly active during the late 70s to late 80s. The group consisted of DeBarge family members Mark, Randy, and El. Bunny, James, and Bobby, who joined the group later.
Their music was a mix of R&B, soul, funk and pop music. The group released six studio Albums before their decline in 1986. The departure of Bunny and El after they were offered solo contracts, saw the remaining members dropped from the Motown label. They signed with an independent label called Stripe Horse Records in 1987 and released what was to become the group’s last Album, Bad Boys.
They continued performing for another two years with Chico DeBarge joining the line-up in 1988. The same year, Bobby and Chico were arrested for drug trafficking, it was their convictions that finally led to the group dispersing in 1989, ten years after they first came to the public’s attention.
The song was written by Diane Warren, the American songwriter. Diane has had massive success throughout her career, so much that the former Chairman of EMI Music Publishing UK credited her as “the most important songwriter in the world “.
Diane has had nine of her songs top the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and thirty-two reach the Top Ten. In Addition to this, two of the Top 13 hits in the Billboard Hot 100 history was her work. As a songwriter she is the first to have seven hit singles, recorded by different artists, to be present on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously.
Diane has written songs for many artists in all genres including Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Meat Loaf and Lady Gaga.
Production for the single was by Richard Perry, the American record producer. Established by 1970, his work as a producer during the 70s include Albums by Harry Nilsson, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel, Diana Ross, Martha Reeves, Manhattan Transfer, Leo Sayer, Andy Williams and Percy Faith. Bruce Eder writing for All Music Guide said of Richard ” Richard Perry would become the most renowned producer in the field of popular music during the 1970s, and the array of albums with which he was associated, made his name synonymous with success. ”
” Rhythm of the Night ” was released on the 23rd of February 1985 by record label Motown ( Universal Music Group ) and taken from the fourth Album of the same name. The Album, released by Gordy Records ( a Motown subsidiary for mainstream R&B/soul music ) on the 14th of March 1985 reached number nineteen on the Billboard 200 and number three on the R&B Album Chart. The Album was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ).
” Rhythm of the Night ” was intended to give DeBarge a change of direction from their previous ballads. Motown was keen to mirror the success of another of the label’s stars, Lionel Richie. He had, like DeBarge, built a fan base for softer songs and crossed over with the release of ” All Night Long “, his catchy hit single influenced by calypso.
The accompanying music video was directed by Peter Heath, the British director. He has worked on videos for Robert Palmer, John Taylor, Stray Cats, De Barge, Yes and Roxette. Peter has also worked on commercials as a senior television producer for Lyons Maid Ice Cream, Grandee Cigars and Heinz.
” Rhythm of the Night ” was a commercial success for DeBarge. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983; the song spent twenty-two weeks on the chart there. It also reached Number One on both the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and the Billboard Hot Black Singles Charts.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 30th of March 1985 and reached a peak of number four. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fifteen weeks on the UK chart.
