Runaway Kanye West
Song Title: Runaway
Artist: Kanye West
Date of release: October 4, 2010
Description: ” Runaway ” is by Kanye West ( Kanye Omari West ), the American Hip Hop artist. The song was written by Kanye West, Terrence Thornton, Emile Haynie, Jeff Bhasker, Mike Dean and John Roger Branch.
The song features the vocals of Pusha T ( Terrence Thornton ) with production for the single by Kanye West, Emile, Jeff Bhasker and Mike Dean.
” Runaway ” was released as the second single from Kanye’s 2010 fifth Album ” My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy “.
The song has the finger tapping piano rift throughout with lyrics of a deep personal nature. Many have suggested that this song is Kanye opening up and welcoming everyone in. Lyrically he talks of the failed relationships and how he accepts that the media in general dislikes him.
In verse 2, Pusha T uses a reference to Ichabod crane, the fictional character in ” The Legend of Sleepy Hollow ” by Washington Irving published in 1820. The character of Ichabod crane had narrow shoulders, this could be a hidden meaning that says Kanye himself hasn’t the broad shoulders needed to take so much criticism, he hurts like the rest of us.
The song also makes reference to douchebags with the line ” toast to the douchebags ” , a douchebag being an obnoxious person, lyrically this is Kanye hitting back.
” Runaway ” has double meaning in the lyrics, Kanye talks of a relationship with a girl, however at the same time he is talking of his relationship with the media and giving his view on society as a whole.
Kanye received good reviews for the song from a variety of music critics, Simon Vozick-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly noted that it ” casts the excesses around it in a new light. West may be obnoxious, but at least he’s interested in confronting those aspects of his identity through his music. Few stars of comparable wattage would dare do the same “.
One critic, Kyle Anderson of MTV News, said ” Runaway ” was the best of Kanye’s career and added ” there’s something about ‘Runaway’ that makes it feel just a little bit more special, like it could really end up in the pantheon of great hip-hop moments”.
The song wasn’t such a commercial success for Kanye, in the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number 12. Although the entry was high, ” Runaway ” only managed to hold that number for one week and failed to climb any higher. The song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for a total of 13 weeks.
In Australia Kanye reached number 46 on the Australian Recording Industry Association ( ARIA ) chart, there the song was certified Gold with sales over 35,000.
In the United Kingdom, ” Runaway ” entered and peaked at number 56 on the chart, the song spent a total of 2 weeks on the Chart.
