Running up that hill Kate Bush
Song Title: Running up that hill
Artist: Kate Bush
Date of release: 5 August 1985
Description: ” Running up that hill ” is by singer-songwriter Kate Bush CBE. Written by Kate the song was the first single to be taken from her 1985 Album ” Hounds of love “.
Written about making a deal with God in exchange for changing lives with another person. So instead of doing a deal with the Devil, Kate thought the concept of the song would be more powerful if it was doing a deal with God.
Kate’s record label EMI were reluctant to release the song with the title ” A deal with God ” as the title.
They felt there would be a negative reception due to the title, after some convincing Kate agreed to the title change and the song was released as ” Running up that hill “, however the title change only applied to the sing’s release as the Album version still contained the original title.
The song wasn’t originally intended to be released, EMI wanted the song ” Cloudbusting ” to become the main single from the Album. Kate dug in and managed to change their minds and release ” Running up that hill ” as the main single from the Album.
She felt the song represented the whole Album better than ” Cloudbusting ” and eventually EMI agreed and the song was released.
” Running up that hill ” proved Kate had made the right decision and was to become a huge hit in the United Kingdom. The song entered the UK charts at number 9 and moved up the charts to reach number 3.
The song was to remain inside the top 10 for 5 weeks and spend a total of 11 weeks on the charts.
In the United States, Kate also had success with the song, there it was to be her first hit single since 1978. The song entered the U.S Billboard Hot 100 Chart and climbed to number 30, ” Running up that hill ” also reached number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart.
Some 27 years later the song was re-mixed and released again this time with the original title ” Running up that hill ( A deal with God ) “.
The new release uses the original 12” extended version with the backing track from the original overlayed with fresh vocals.
