Originally released by record label Island in June 1972 by The Sutherland Bros, the song was taken from their 1972 Album ” Lifeboat “.
” Sailing ” was released by The Sutherland Bros as a follow-up to their minor hit single ” Pie “. They received a good amount of radio play for ” Sailing ” but again this follow-up was also unsuccessful commercially.
Three years after the original was released, Rod Stewart covered the song. He’d moved to America after British Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson introduced an 83 per cent top rate of income tax. Rod said of the move ” I left Britain because i was paying 83 per cent of everything i was earning to the taxman…. I was in a position to move and i fell in love with the place “.
Once in the US, Rod set about recording a new Album ” Atlantic Crossing “. The Album was recorded at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama.
Working with legendary American recording engineer and producer Tom Dowd, Rod covered the song ” Sailing “. For the new Album and single Rod used session musicians which included The Memphis Horns and three-quarters of Booker T. and the MG’s.
The result was a new Album ” Atlantic crossing ” and a single called ” Sailing “.
This version of the song was released as the first single from the Album in 1975 on the record label Warner Bros. Rod took the original song and turned it into a number one hit single.
In the United Kingdom ” Sailing ” entered the UK chart on the 16th of August 1975 and peaked at number one where it held the spot for 4 weeks. It spent 13 weeks in the top ten and a total of 30 weeks on the UK chart.
Rod returned to the UK chart a year later when the song was used as the theme tune to a BBC documentary series Sailor about the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal. Second time round the song reached number 3 on the UK chart.
” Sailing ” has been a hit twice for Rod and remains his biggest selling single to date in the UK with sales of over a Million copies.
The song was also number one in Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands and Norway. In the United States the song only reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Rod released ” Sailing ” as a charity single in 1987 after The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster at Zeebrugge, Belgium. The maritime disaster in which the Townsend Thoresen car ferry left port with her bow doors open and capsized with the loss of 193 people.
