” Sailing ” is by Rod Stewart ( Roderick David “Rod” Stewart ), the British rock singer-songwriter. The song was written by Gavin Sutherland.
Production for the single was done by Muff Winwood ( Mervyn ‘ Muff ‘ Winwood ) who is the older brother of Steve Winwood.
Initially released by record label Island in June 1972 by The Sutherland Bros, the song was taken from their 1972 album, Lifeboat.
” Sailing ” was released by The Sutherland Bros as a follow-up to their minor hit single ” Pie “. They received a good amount of radio play for ” Sailing “, but again this follow-up was also unsuccessful commercially.
Three years after the original was released, Rod Stewart covered the song. He’d moved to America after British Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson introduced an 83 percent top rate of income tax. Rod said of the move ” I left Britain because I was paying 83 percent of everything I was earning to the taxman…. I was in a position to move, and I fell in love with the place. ”
Once in the United States, Rod set about recording a new album, Atlantic Crossing. The album was recorded at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama.
Working with legendary American recording engineer and producer Tom Dowd, Rod covered the song ” Sailing “. For the new album and single Rod used session musicians which included The Memphis Horns and three-quarters of Booker T. and the MG’s.
His cover version of the song was released as the first single from the album in 1975 on the record label Warner Bros. Rod took the original song and turned it into a Number One hit single.
In the United Kingdom, ” Sailing ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of August 1975 and peaked at Number One, holding the spot for four weeks. It spent thirteen weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirty weeks on the UK chart.
Rod returned to the UK Singles Chart a year later when the song was used as the theme tune to a BBC documentary series, Sailor, about the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal. The second time around the song reached number three on the UK chart.
” Sailing ” has been a hit twice for Rod and remains his biggest selling single to date in the United Kingdom with sales of over one million copies.
The single was also number one in Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands and Norway.In the United States, it only reached number fifty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Rod released ” Sailing ” as a charity single in 1987 after The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster at Zeebrugge, Belgium. The maritime tragedy in which the Townsend Thoresen car ferry left port with her bow doors open and capsized, the tragedy cost the lives of 193 people.
