Saltwater Julian Lennon

” Saltwater ” is by Julian Lennon ( John Charles Julian Lennon ), the British musician, photographer and eldest son of Beatle John Lennon. The song was written by Julian Lennon, Mark Spiro and Leslie Spiro.
Production for the single was by Bob Ezrin, the Canadian music producer and keyboardist who has worked with artists like Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and ex-Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel.
” Saltwater ” was released on the 5th of August 1991 by record labels Atlantic in the United States and Charisma Records in the United Kingdom. The song was taken from Julian’s fourth album, Help yourself.
Co-writer Mark Spiro, the American songwriter and record producer, has worked on records with combined Worldwide sales of over 100 Million. He also co-wrote ” Mighty Wings ” which was performed by Cheap trick and included on the soundtrack of the film, Top Gun.
Julian was way ahead of his time, in the song he sings about World poverty and environmental conservation long before the subjects entered into the public’s consciousness.
In the lyrics he sings about the achievements of the Human race for example ” We’re so ingenious, we can walk on the moon “, then highlights the failures with the lines like ” Why should one baby, feel so hungry she cries “. He adds that time is not a friend, a reference to how time is running out for the planet.
Julian wrote a guitar solo for the single, and he used another Beatle member’s style, George Harrison, as inspiration. Upon hearing the guitar solo Julian had produced, producer Bob Ezrin suggested that Julian ask George to play the solo on the track instead.
At the time Eric Clapton’s son Conor had died in an accident at a high-rise condominium in New York after falling from an open window. George was busy consoling Eric so couldn’t do the guitar solo for Julian. George made a recording of a few riffs and sent them back to Julian.
On the track the guitar solo was played by Steve Hunter ( also known as The Deacon ), the American guitarist has worked with artists like Aerosmith, Lou Reed and Peter Gabriel, in fact, he plays the acoustic intro on ” Solsbury Hill “, Peter Gabriel’s hit 1979 single.
For ” Saltwater ” Steve Hunter combined the styles of both the solo’s done by Julian and George.
In the notes for the album, Help Yourself, Julian he gives special thanks to George for the guitar solo.
American musician Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel, the Australian guitarist, recorded a Guitar Duet for their 1997 album, The day finger pickers took over the World.
At an open-air concert, Artister För Miljö, ABBA’s Anni-Frid Lyngstad performed the song live and included her cover version as the B-side on her single ” Änglamark ” ( Where Angels Tread ).
In the 1991 Christmas episode, Miami Twice, part 2 of the popular British sitcom Only Fools and Horses, the song can be head in full.
Despite ” Saltwater ” being used in a favourite British sitcom watched by 17.7 million people, chart success was limited for Julian.
In Australia, the song reached Number One and stayed at the top for four weeks in March 1992. The song spent eighteen weeks on the ARIA Chart and was the 14th highest selling single of 1992 in that country.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 24th of August 1991 and reached a peak of number six. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirteen weeks on the UK chart.
