The song was written and produced by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. Bill Martin ( William Wylie MacPherson ) is a Scottish three times Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriter, music publisher and impresario from Glasgow, Scotland.
He co-wrote ” Puppet on a String ” which British singer Sandie Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967 and another UK entry ” Congratulations “, a song by Cliff Richard. The song came second to Spain’s entry ” La, la, la ” in the 1968 contest and went on to be a UK Number One.
Phil Coulter is an Irish musician, songwriter and record producer. The Grammy Nominated, five times Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriter formed a writing team with Bill Martin, between them they penned four UK Number Ones between 1967 and 1976, along with many UK Top Ten chart hits. In 1975 Phil Coulter and Bill Martin jointly received a Songwriter of the Year Ivor Novello Award.
” Saturday Night ” was released on the 29th of September 1975 by record label Arista ( owned by Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from their Album, Rollin’, which wasn’t released in America.
The Bay City Rollers had now a foothold in the American market and gained devotees, just like they had back in the United Kingdom. They appeared live via satellite on the premier segment of the TV show Saturday Night Live on the ABC Network, hosted by Howard Cosell and made many more TV appearances in the United States including American Bandstand and The Midnight Special.
” Saturday Night ” was a commercial success for the Bay City Rollers. In the United States, the song debuted at number eighty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, twelve weeks later the song had reached Number One where it spent one week at the top and a total of seventeen weeks on the chart there. The song was the first Billboard Hot 100 Chart Number One of the US Bicentennial year.
