Saturday night Whigfield

Song Title: Saturday night

Artist: Whigfield

Date of release: 29 November 1993

Description: ” Saturday night ” by Whigfield a Danish Eurodance artist, real name Sannie Carlson, a former model. This song was released first back in 1993 and then again in Europe in 1994 where it went on to achieve huge success. The song was written by Larry Pignagnoli and Davide Riva, both Italian producers. Upon release ” Saturday night ” shot straight to the top of the UK charts and in doing so knocked off Wet Wet Wet and their huge chart topper ” Love is all around ” which had been sat there for fifteen weeks.

First released in Italy during January 1994 the song found popularity with British holidaymakers on the continent who went on to create a buzz and demand for the track back in the United Kingdom, it wasn’t until February ’95 that Whigfield had a release of the single in the US.
” Saturday night ” was a huge dance floor filler with record sales of approximately 680,000 copies and a run at the top of the UK charts of four weeks, estimates put total sales of 1.18 Million making it the UK’s 15th biggest selling single by a female artist.

To accompany any dance tune you need a dance, Whigfield’s single certainly had that with the now familiar dance routine, origins of the dance are uncertain with some suggesting it started as an aerobic routine. In the video Whigfield doesn’t perform the dance instead is seen using a mirror to get ready for a night out, but during a live performance the the UK Chart shop Top of the Pops backing dancers do the routine.
Accusations from two different groups of plagiarism were levelled at Whigfield, first was from the 60’s group the Equals saying the song ripped off ” Rub a Dub Dub ” and the second from Lindisfarne who claimed it was actually their song “Fog on the Tyne”. Both groups unsuccessfully sued Whigfield.
