Eliot is an English songwriter and record producer. Based in Sheffield, England, he has worked with a variety of artists like Bryan Adams, Lulu, S Club 7, Five, Gary Barlow, Delta Goodrem, The Wanted, Janet Devlin and Lovers Electric.
” Say You’ll Be There ” was released on the 14th of October 1996 by record label Virgin ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the second single from their debut Album, Spice. The pop music Album is fused with the styles of dance, R&B and hip-hop.
Many consider Spice to be the record that brought teen pop back into the mainstream charts, paving the way for future teen pop artists. The Album centred around Girl Power and went on to become the world’s top-selling Album of 1997 with sales of nineteen million in over a year. In total it sold over twenty-eight million copies Worldwide, making it the biggest-selling Album in music history by a girl group along with one of the most successful Albums of all time.
” Say You’ll Be There ” heavily samples ” What U R 2 Me ” by After 7, the American R&B group. Lyrically the song describes the things the girls have been through together and how they always have been there for one another. At the time critics gave the single mixed reviews, some describing the lyrics as confusing with some feeling it was the girls using the R&B infused track as a way to try and gain street cred amongst fans.
The accompanying music video was directed by Vaughan Arnell, the British music videos and television commercials director. He co-directed with Anthea Benton ” You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) “, 1984 hit by Dead or Alive. He has also worked with Terence Trent D’Arby, Soul II Soul, Jamiroquai, Take That and George Michael.
The video was filmed in the Mojave Desert, California on 7-8 September 1996. The arid rain-shadow desert is located in the southwestern United States and is the driest in North America.
The video features the girls as a band of female techno-warriors, who capture a hapless male using martial arts and high-tech ninja influenced weapons. The actor who is caught by the girls was played by American model Tony Ward. Tony is an actor and model who got his first starring role in 1996 in the movie Hustler White; he also has his own fashion brand SixInTheFace.
” Say You’ll Be There ” was a commercial success for the Spice Girls. In the United Kingdom, the single debuted at Number One on the UK Singles Chart with sales of 350,000. It was the girls first single to debut at the top of the UK Single Chart, spending two weeks there. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-one weeks on the chart there.
In the United States, the single was released on the 6th of May 1997. It set a record on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, when it debuted at number five, at the time it was the highest-entry by a British act in the country. Finally the single peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for three consecutive weeks.
