He has worked with many artists along with Taylor Swift including Katy Perry, Pink and Britney Spears.
Shellback ( Karl Johan Schuster ) is a songwriter, record producer and musician and a two times Grammy Award-winner. He works regularly with Max Martin and the both have written or co-written for some of the biggest names in pop music.
” Shake It Off ” was released on the 18th of August 2014 by record labels Big Machine and Republic, the song was taken as the lead single from her fifth Album ” 1989 ” and the sixth track overall.
The song is an uptempo dance-pop song and saw Taylor break away from her previous Country pop music style. In August 2014 Taylor started to tease her fans that an announcement was coming soon.
On the 4th she posted a video on her Instagram account showing her pushing the number 18 in an elevator. Two days later she tweeted an image of the time 5:00 and then followed that up the next day with a screenshot of the Yahoo! homepage.
5 Days before the live stream she told host Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that the Yahoo! live stream would take place on the 18th of August at 5pm.
Taylor premiered the track with the music video also being made available the same day along with the digital download a few hours later.
Lyrically ” Shake It Off ” is a response to Taylor’s critics, she commented before about what is said of her ” I’ve learned a pretty tough lesson that people can say whatever they want about us at any time, and we cannot control that. The only thing we can control is our reaction to that “.
In an interview with Rolling Stone Taylor explained in more detail saying ” I’ve had every part of my life dissected—my choices, my actions, my words, my body, my style, my music. When you live your life under that kind of scrutiny, you can either let it break you, or you can get really good at dodging punches. And when one lands, you know how to deal with it. And I guess the way that I deal with it is to shake it off “.
One problem she had to shake off was a lawsuit filed by Jesse Braham, an American R&B singer. The $42m (£27m) lawsuit claimed that Taylor had stolen the words from a song he had written a year earlier called ” Haters Gone Hate “.
Along with compensation the singer also wanted his name added as one of the writers. In an interview with the New York Daily News Jesse Braham said ” Her hook is the same hook as mine. If I didn’t write the song Haters Gone Hate, there wouldn’t be a song called Shake It Off “. The lawsuit failed after the judge dismissed the allegation.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mark Romanek, the American filmmaker whose work as a director includes feature films, television, music videos and commercials. He directed Michael and Janet Jackson’s ” Scream ” video.
The video was filmed over three days in Van Nuys, California, which is a neighborhood in the central San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
” Shake It Off ” was a commercial success for Taylor. In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at Number One and spent 2 weeks at the top. It then dropped to number 2 because of Meghan Trainor’s ” All about that bass ” and stayed put for 8 weeks before going back to Number One. In total the song spent four non-consecutive weeks at the top.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 30th of August 2014 at number 4 and climbed to peak at number 2. It spent 12 weeks in the top ten and a total of 50 weeks on the UK chart.
