Electric worked previously on the group’s second Album Salute, which reached number 6 on the Billboard 200 Chart, number 4 on the UK Album and Australian Albums (ARIA) charts.
” Shout Out to My Ex ” was released on the 16th of October 2016 by record label Syco and taken as the group’s lead single from their fourth Album Glory Days.
The Album became Little Mix’s first Album to reach Number One in the UK. Sales in the first week of 90,000 made the album the fastest-selling since the late David Bowie’s Blackstar ( which sold 146,000 copies in its first week ) which was released 10 months before. The record held by Little Mix for Albums sales in the first week of release was broken by the Rolling Stones just two weeks later.
Lyrically the empowering dance-pop song talks about not showing regret after a breakup with a boyfriend and wishing the new couple all the best. Some suggested the song was directed at the breakup between group member Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik, the former member of boyband One Direction. It’s also been suggested that not only are the lyrics directed at Zayn but at his girlfriend Gigi Hadid ( Jelena Noura “Gigi” Hadid ), the American fashion model.
According to news.com.au the original lyrics had to be cleaned up for the group’s target market, an earlier version of the song had the lyric ” heard he been f—-ng some model chick, yeah that s— hurt I’ll admit, but f— that boy I’m over it ”.
Perrie Edwards explained of the lyric change and the need to clean up the song ” We had to make it clean. We didn’t want to have the parental advisory sticker on our albums and singles. Even though our fans are our age, 20 or over 18, we still have a lot of young fans. But it does feel good to swear, doesn’t it? ”
The accompanying music video was directed by Amalia Rosen-Rawlings, the director has worked with the like of Robbie Williams, Olly Murs and Foxes. The video was filmed on location in The Tabernas Desert ( known as Desierto de Tabernas in Spanish ), it is one of Spain’s semi-deserts which is in an area within Spain’s southeastern province of Almería. The area is the driest within Europe and is officially the only true desert in the whole of the Continent.
