Date of release: 4th of September 1986
Description: ” Showing Out ( Get fresh at the weekend ) ” is by Mel and Kim, the British pop duo, consisting of the Appleby sisters Melanie and Kim. The song was written and produced by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman.
The song was released on the 4th of September 1986 by record labels Supreme ( affiliated to Peter Waterman Entertainment ), RCA and in America by Atlantic. It was taken as Mel and Kim’s debut single from their first and only Album ” F.L.M. “.
Originally it was the B-side ” System ” that was going to be released as the sisters debut single, however after Pete Waterman got to know Mel and Kim he felt that this song wasn’t right for them as a debut and stopped the single. The task was given to Mike Stock to write an alternative, using influences from the Chicago garage house sound of the likes of Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk along with Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, Mike came up with ” Showing Out ( Get fresh at the weekend ) “.
The song was promoted extensively by the girls in clubs up and down the United Kingdom for months, over time the song’s chart position started to improve. But the real break came when they got a chance to perform on the UK’s most watched chart show, the BBC’s Top Of The Pops. Due to a last-minute cancellation by another artist Mel and Kim were asked to perform, their performance lasted for three and a half minutes and as a result they saw the song climb into the UK top ten singles chart.
The performance on Top Of The Pops was the first time the sisters had appeared on tv. Kim commented on their website as ” The scariest moment of our lives!”.
With the growing popularity for the song, Supreme records commissioned a video to accompany the song. The music video was directed by Simon West, the British director started out at the BBC as a film editor in 1981. Along with directing for Mel and Kim he also directed the video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.
Simon is also a film director with credits including Con Air (1997), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), When a Stranger Calls (2006), The Mechanic (2011) and The Expendables 2 (2012).
In the video Mel and Kim perform a dance routine they had put together themselves in Kim’s living room. Kim said later of the video ” I absolutely loved that video as it is 100% Mel & Kim. We’ve got such an attitude in that video! “.
” Showing Out ( Get fresh at the weekend ) ” was a commercial success for Mel and Kim. In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart and peaked at number 3 in November 1986. It spent 5 weeks in the top ten and a total of 20 weeks on the UK chart. For sales exceeding 250,000 the song was certified Silver by the BPI ( British Phonographic Industry ).
Mel and Kim also enjoyed chart success outside of the United Kingdom. The song reached Number One in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium.
