Quincy Jones ( Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. ), sometimes known as simply as Q is a record producer with a career of sixty years in the music business. He has a record 79 Grammy nominations and 28 Grammys. He won the Grammy Legend Award in 1991.
Quincy produced Michael’s Album Thriller ,which went on to sell a reputed 110 million copies, making it the best-selling Album of all time.
” Smooth Criminal ” was released on the 21st of October 1988 by record label Epic and taken as the 7th single from Michael’s Multi Million selling Album Bad.
The Album, Michael’s seventh solo Album, was his third studio Album released with Epic Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ). There were a record five Billboard Hot 100 Chart Number One’s released for the Album. Bad was the first of two Albums to achieve this, the second artist to do this was Katy Perry with her Album Teenage Dream released in 2010.
In 1985 two versions of the song were written with the original demo being recorded a year later. The first was titles ” Chicago 1945 ” which evolved to become ” Al Capone “. This version of the song didn’t make it onto the finished Album, it was later re-written by Michael and renamed ” Smooth Criminal “.
Michael can be heard using the phrase ” Annie, are you OK? ” in the song. The phrase is used in CPR ( Cardiopulmonary resuscitation ) training courses. Michael is known to have taken a course CPR techniques. ” Annie ” is used in the courses as the name of the mannequin used in CPR training.
As part of the teaching during the course, trainees are instructed to say ” Annie, are you OK? ” to the dummy in order to check that the patient is conscious and responsive. The characteristic face of ” Annie ” better known as Resusci Anne, was based on L’Inconnue de la Seine, the death mask of an unidentified young woman who is reputed to have drowned in the River Seine around the latter part of the 1880’s.
The accompanying music video features Michael and his friends face off against the notorious drug lord Mr. Big, played by Joe Pesci. Michael attempts to foil the drug lord’s plot to get the children of the world hooked on drugs. Michael, in the end, defeats the villain.
The video was directed by Colin Chilvers, the Oscar-winning special effects coordinator for Superman: The Movie, released in 1978. The English film director and special effects coordinator has also worked on X-Men released in the year 2000 and The Rocky Horror Picture Show from 1975.
The dance sequence of the video which takes place in the 1930s style lounge with Michael dressed in a white suit and fedora hat payed tribute to the Fred Astaire musical comedy film The Band Wagon.
The video won Best Music Video at the Brit Awards in 1989, it also won the Critic’s Choice award for ” Best Video ” award. It also won the People’s Choice Award for ” Favorite Music Video ” for that same year.
” Smooth Criminal ” was a commercial success for Michael. In the United States the song peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 15 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 26th of November 1988 and peaked at number 8. It spent 2 weeks in the top ten and a total of 24 weeks on the UK chart.
