” Somebody That I Used To Know ” is by Gotye, the Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter. Written by Gotye, the song features additional vocals by Kimbra, the New Zealand singer.
Gotye wrote and recorded the song at his parent’s house; the mid-tempo indie ballad is about the experiences with relationships he has had before.
” Somebody That I Used To Know ” samples ” Seville ” written and performed originally by Luiz Bonfá, the Brazilian guitarist and composer who is best known for his work on film compositions like Black Orpheus.
In 2011 the song was released in Australia and New Zealand by the record label Eleven Music, ” Somebody That I Used To Know ” was to be the second single from his third album, Making Mirrors.
A commercially successful song for Gotye, it entered the ARIA Singles Chart in Australia at number twenty-seven, even with a lack of airplay it still reached Number One, this was to be the most successful song for both Gotye and Kimbra.
In the same year as the Australian release, ” Somebody That I Used To Know ” reached the top of the charts in both Belgium and the Netherlands. The Irish charts also gave success for Gotye with a number forty-seven entry, later making the Number One spot.
On the RIANZ Singles Chart in New Zealand, the single entered at number four, three weeks later it reached Number One. The hit single was to make Gotye the first Australian singer to reach the top spot since Guy Sebastian ( 2003 Australian Idol winner ) with his song ” Who’s That Girl “.
The United Kingdom record buyers also loved the song with ” Somebody That I Used To Know ” going straight to the top of the UK Singles Chart and spending five weeks there.
In the United States, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-one, after fifteen weeks on the chart it shot to Number One where it settled for eight weeks.
