Song Title: Sometimes
Artist: Britney Spears
Date of release: April 30, 1999
Description: ” Sometimes ” is by Britney Spears the American singer. Written by Britney and Jörgen Elofsson with production by Per Magnusson and David Kreuger, the song was taken from her first Album, …Baby One More Time, in 1999.
The record label JIVE Records released ” Sometimes ” as the second single from the Album on April 1999.
Written as a teen bubblegum pop song where a shy girl is trying to deal with her shyness when her lover tells her he’s in love with her.
She wants to be with him but keeps pulling away without expressing her feelings for him.
Music critics gave a mixed response to the song. Some liked the overall feel of the song with the safe and ” nice ” feel continuing throughout. Other critics had less praise; some comments suggested Britney had produced an unremarkable song and that she had an obsession with guys. Her last these songs had been about the subject.
However despite the mixed reviews from music critics, ” Sometimes ” was a Worldwide commercial success for Britney. The song reached Number One in Belgium, Netherlands and New Zealand.
In the United States ” Sometimes ” reached number twenty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and went on to spend a total of twenty weeks on the chart. On the Adult Contemporary Chart, the song reached number eleven and Britney scored a number twenty-nine on the Adult Pop Songs Charts.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number three, but failed to climb higher and spent a total of sixteen weeks on the chart.
” Sometimes ” was to be Britney’s third best seller in the UK with sales in the region of 456,000 physical copies of the single sold.
The success of the song did give Britney a headache early on in the form of a copyright dispute. Steve Wallace, a songwriter from Indiana USA, claimed he’d written the song in 1990. He argued that Britney had admitted he’d written the song via email which he produced to back up his claim. However in October 2005, the email was considered to be fake by Judge John D. Tinder, and Britney cleared of stealing the song.
