” Sonic Boom Boy ” is by Westworld, who was a British 80s pop group.
The band, formed in 1986, consisted of Bob ‘ Derwood ‘ Andrews, the former Generation X guitarist, Gary “Gaz” Young, Tracey ‘T.J. ‘ O’Conner, Nick Burton and Elizabeth Westwood, the American singer-songwriter.
Nick Burton left the line-up before their third album, Beatbox Rock ‘N’ Roll was released in 1988. The group, who took their style from comic books, took their name from Westworld, the American sci-fi film released in 1973.
Written and directed by Michael Crichton, it starred the late Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin.
Westworld released six studio albums and eight singles. It was only ” Sonic Boom Boy ” that made the Top Twenty.
” Sonic Boom Boy ” was released in February 1987 under the record label RCA, now part of Sony Music.
The song was written by the band members with production by Mark Ferda, the Welsh producer, sound editor, sound designer and dubbing mixer.
Based in Cardiff, he has worked with a variety of artists including Jah Wobble, Brian Eno, The 4 of Us, Sly and Robbie and Captain Sensible, the co-founder of The Damned, the British punk rock band.
Along with music, he has also worked in TV and film. Currently working at BBC Wales, his credits for documentaries include Tribe, Doctor Who and Human Planet, for which Mark Ferda received a Bafta best sound award nomination.
The single was taken from the album, Where the Action Is. It featured twelve songs and produced four UK chart singles.
Where the Action Is entered the UK Albums Chart on the 5th of September 1987 at number ninety-three. It peaked at number forty-nine and spent two weeks in the Top 100.
In Sweden, the album also peaked at forty-nine and stayed on the chart there for one week.
” Sonic Boom Boy ” became a commercial success for Westworld. In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 22nd of February 1987 and reached number eleven.
It spent three weeks in the Top Twenty and seven weeks in the Top 100.
In the Netherlands, the single peaked at sixty-one and spent six weeks on the chart. It also reached number eight in Sweden and stayed on the chart there for four weeks.
