” Souvenir ” is by OMD ( Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ), the British electronic music group formed in 1978 in Wirral, Merseyside, England. OMD was founded by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys.
The song was written by Martin Cooper and Paul Humphreys. English musician Martin, first joined OMD in 1980 and took on the role of secondary keyboardist and saxophonist on occasions.
The song was produced by Mike Howlett, a Grammy Award-winning producer based in the United Kingdom. The Fijian musician has worked with many artists including Martha & The Muffins, Joan Armatrading, Sniff ‘n’ the Tears and The Alarm.
” Souvenir ” was released on the 4th of August 1981 by record label Dindisc ( Virgin Records ) and released as the first single from the group’s third album, Architecture & Morality.
The album has over the years appeared on many Best Albums lists and is regarded by many critics to be a masterpiece. Three internationally successful singles were released from the album with combined sales of over 8 million. The album has sold in the region of 4 million copies worldwide.
Although not liked by lead singer, Andy McCluskey, they went ahead and released the song with co-writer Paul Humphreys providing the lead vocal on the track. It was to be the only song that features Paul on lead vocals until 1985 and the release of ” Secret ” and later with ” ( Forever ) Live and Die ” in 1986.
The accompanying music video was filmed on location at Stowe House, Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England. Now an independent school, the grounds used in the video are today open to the public and are under the stewardship of The National Trust.
In the video, Andy McCluskey drives a classic red, convertible Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Paul Humphreys can be seen singing ” Souvenir ” standing on the Palladian Bridge. The style of the bridge is today known as Palladian architecture, after Venetian 16th century architect Andrea Palladio.

” Souvenir ” was a commercial success for OMD. The song reached Number One on both the Spanish Singles and the Portuguese Singles charts.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 29th of August 1981 and reached a peak of number three. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart.
The song shares a number three highest chart position with ” Sailing On The Seven Seas “, released in 1991. Both of which are OMD’s most successful UK singles regarding chart positions.
