The single is a dance-pop and hip hop track with a fusion of funk. Lyrically, it serves as a “comeback”, talking about partying, having a good time and feminism. It was marketed as Gwen’s musical comeback as a solo artist along with her previous release, ” Baby Don’t Lie “.
During an interview with Scott T. Sterling in 2014, Pharrell described the track as inspired by his feeling that ” the female species has been suppressed long enough “, however during an interview with PopSugar’s Lindsay Miller, Gwen described the song as being ” a very personal song ” and ” my journey ” instead of any kind of feminist anthem.
Music critics had mixed responses to the song, with some negatively comparing it to Gwen and Pharrell’s previous collaboration ” Hollaback Girl “, others liked the track, comparing it to ” Baby Don’t Lie “.
