Song Title: Stand and Deliver
Artist: Adam and the Ants
Date of release: 27 April 1981
Description: ” Stand and Deliver ” is by Adam and the Ants, the British 80’s new wave band. The song was written by Adam Ant ( Stuart Leslie Goddard ) and Marco Pirroni.
Production for the single was by Chris Hughes, also known as Merrick, who has worked with the likes of Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel and Jon Bon Jovi.
The song was released in 1981 by record label CBS Records and taken as the lead single from the Album, Prince Charming.
” Stand and Deliver ” uses the English Highwayman as the centrepiece, Adam uses the typical look of an 18th-century Highwayman mixed with native American war paint.
The Highwayman was a big problem for the traveller on English highways from Elizabethan times to the early 19th century. Even today the Highwayman has a romantic, dashing appeal made famous by the infamous Dick Turpin.
Adam Ant took that romantic public image and applied it to ” Stand and Deliver “. In the song he calls himself a ” dandy highwayman ” which is how the public sees that type of criminal, they are still known as ” knights of the road ” and also ” gentlemen of the road “.
With Adam’s model looks and flair for a costume, he captured the public imagination with the song. In the video he is seen as a highwayman who holds up a coach and mocks their looks, telling them that the devil will take their stereo and record collection.
Later he is captured and is due to be hanged when he is rescued by his gang members ( Other band members ), Adam avoids the noose and escapes.
” Stand and Deliver ” was a commercial success for Adam, it was to be one of the group’s two UK number ones, the other being ” Prince Charming “.
The song was a success in Europe where it entered the Top Ten in countries including Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
In Sweden the song reached the Top twenty reaching a peak of number seventeen, it stayed on the Topplistan Chart ( as it was known then ) for four weeks.
In New Zealand, Adam took the song into the Top Forty and reached a peak position of number thirty-two and four weeks on the chart.
In the United Kingdom, ” Stand and Deliver ” entered the chart at Number One and spent five weeks at the top. The song spent seven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fifteen weeks on the chart.
The song proved to be popular in the United Kingdom with Adam and the Ants selling over One Million copies of the single.
The British public voted ” Stand and Deliver ” as the nation’s 15th favourite 1980s number one in a 2015 poll conducted by the British TV network ITV.
