Stayin’ Alive Bee Gees
Song Title: Stayin’ Alive
Artist: Bee Gees
Date of release: 13 December 1977
Description: “Stayin’ Alive” is written and performed by the Bee Gees, a disco floor filler from the seventies this song filling a dancefloor even today.
Taken from the Saturday Night Fever film soundtrack the song is about dangers on the streets of New York. Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb also wrote a track called ” Saturday night “, however, there already were many songs of that name, for example by the Bay City Rollers it was decided to call it ” Stayin’ Alive “.
Not intended to be released as a single, fans called radio stations and RSO records asking for the song after seeing trailers for the film Saturday Night Fever. Due to the already growing popularity, the song was released and steadily climbed the US Charts to reach Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and stayed there for four weeks.
However, the popularity didn’t extend quite so much in the UK as the song only reached number four.
Along with being one of the most famous disco songs of all time, ” Stayin’ Alive ” is often used by the medical profession to train in CPR as thinking about the song gives the exact right amount of chest compressions per minute.
With near to 104 beats per minute this proved helpful as it is near to the 100-120 chest compressions per minute used in CPR. This procedure is recommended by the British Heart Foundation along with the Resuscitation Council of the United Kingdom.
In 2011 ” Stayin’ Alive ” featured in a TV campaign by the American Heart Association which featured the actor and doctor Ken Jeong, who wore the John Travolta suit from the film. In the UK the actor Vinnie Jones performs CPR to the tune.
Rolling Stones Magazine placed ” Stayin’ Alive ” at number 189 on their list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
