” Sugar ” is by Maroon 5, the American pop rock group from Los Angeles, California. The song was written by Adam Levine, Joshua Coleman, Lukasz Gottwald, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Mike Posner and Henry Walter.
Production for the single was by two of the co-writers, Ammo ( Joshua Coleman ) and Cirkut ( Henry Russell Walter ).
The song was taken as the third single from the group’s fifth album, V, released in 2015 on the Interscope record label, a division of parent company Universal Music Group.
Originally written and intended for the album, Pages, by Mike Posner the project was dropped, and so the song was given by Mike to Maroon 5 to record. Adam Levine took ” Sugar ” and added to the song, and along with the other writers a new version was created with Adam singing lead and Mike adding additional vocals.
The music video that accompanies the song shows the group crashing several weddings surprising the bride and guests. The idea came from the 2005 box office hit movie, Wedding Crashers.
Filmed in and around Los Angeles, the video shows wedding guests sitting wondering what’s happening when a screen is erected and then cheering when the screen drops to show Maroon 5 performing.
The stunt has created some debate as to whether the wedding crashes were real or faked. In an interview with Carly Mallenbaum of USAToday, Wedding photographer Eric Parsons commented on the reaction from one of the wedding’s the group crashed which involved Sharon and Steve. Eric said ” Sharon knew nothing about it, you can see her mouth WTF. ”
While Sharon and Steve’s surprise was undoubtedly real, others have been questioned as to how real they were. At another wedding, an actor played a groom with other actors playing the parents.
The wedding stunt seemed to pay off. Music critics gave ” Sugar ” mostly positive reviews. Idolator’s Mike Wass called the song a ” ridiculously catchy jam. ”
Alexa Tietjen writing for VH1 called the song a ” radio-friendly pop song. “. However, one critic from Entertainment Weekly commented that the song was ” simultaneously empty and cluttered. ”
The song was a commercial success for Maroon 5. In the United States, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number eight and climbed to peak at number two. It stayed on the chart for nine weeks. With the successful debut of this song on the chart, it was to be Maroon 5’s third single to go straight into the Top Ten in the country.
Outside of the United States, the group scored a hit in the United Kingdom, where the song entered and reached a peak of number seven on the UK Singles Chart. The single spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of forty-five weeks on the chart.
