Song Title: Sugar Sugar

Artist: The Archies

Date of release: May the 24th 1969

Description: ” Sugar Sugar ” is by the Archies, a fictitious cartoon band. The song was written by Jeff Barry ( also produced ) and Andy Kim.
Jeff Barry is an American pop music songwriter, singer and record producer. He, along with his then wife Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector, wrote some of the biggest hit records of the 1960’s including ” Do Wah Diddy Diddy “, ” Then He Kissed Me “, ” Be My Baby “, ” Chapel of Love ” and ” River Deep – Mountain High “.
Andy Kim ( Andrew Youakim ) is a Canadian pop rock singer and songwriter. He had a US Number One with ” Rock Me Gently ” in 1974.
” Sugar Sugar ” was released on the 24th of May 1969 by record label Calendar and re-released in July 1969 by record label Kirshner. The song was taken from The Archies second Album ” Everything’s Archie “.
The bubblegum pop song was performed by a fictional cartoon teen group who appeared in the cartoon series The Archie Show. Produced by Filmation, the series was based on comic books called Archie, created in 1941 by Bob Montana.
The group was the idea of Don Kirshner, who had earlier been responsible for the Monkees tv shows. He found real performers too difficult to manipulate and felt cartoon characters were much easier.
Don brought in studio musicians and two session singers for the project. Ron Dante on lead vocals with Toni Wine and Andy Kim adding backing vocals. Toni sang the line ” I’m gonna make your life so sweet “.
The three singers used multitracking to give the illusion it was Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Moose and their friends singing together.
Toni Wine didn’t get involved in further singles like ” Jingle Jangle ” and ” Who’s your baby ” because she was unhappy at not being paid royalties for the three Million selling ” Sugar Sugar “.
Don had the single played to radio station execs without revealing the name of the group behind it. After poor sales for their previous single ” Feelin’ So Good (S.k.o.o.b.y-D.o.o.) ” which reached number 53 Billboard Hot 100 Chart he didn’t want to reveal the fact it was the same ficticious group, only revealing the identity of the group after he got positive reaction from most of the DJs.
” Sugar Sugar ” was a huge commercial success. In the United States the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and held the top slot for 4 weeks. It spent a total of 22 weeks on the chart there. The Archies knocked ” Honky Tonk Women ” by The Rolling Stones from Number One.
In the United Kingdom ” Sugar Sugar ” reached Number One on the 25th of October 1969 and spent 8 weeks at the top.
The song has become one of the biggest selling singles ever with sales exceeding 6 Million Worldwide. ” Sugar Sugar ” is widely considered to be the most produced recording in music history. The Missouri based cereal company called Post Cereal put millions of the records on the back of their popular cereal Super Sugar Crisp boxes.
