Her second Album, Born to Die, was Lana’s debut Album for a major label. The Album was released on the 27th of January 2012 by record labels Interscope Records, Polydor Records and Stranger Records. Born to Die reached number two on the Billboard 200 Chart and became the fifth best-selling Album of that year.
” Summertime Sadness ” was written by Rick Nowels and Lana Del Rey. Rick is an award-winning American songwriter and record producer. He has worked with some top recording artists including Adele, Madonna, Sia, Dido, Rod Stewart, Nelly Furtado and John Legend. Rick co-wrote ” White Flag “, Dido’s UK Singles Chart number two hit single. The song won the Ivor Novello award and ASCAP ( American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ) song of the year in 2004.
The single was produced by Emile Haynie, Rick Nowels. Emile is an American music producer. His work includes alternative rock, hip-hop, indie and pop music genres. Emile co-produced ” Runaway ” Kanye West’s 2010 Billboard Hot 100 Chart number twelve single. Emile was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for Album of the Year for Eminem’s seventh studio Album, Recovery. The Album reached the top of both the UK and US Album charts.
” Summertime Sadness ” was released on the 22nd of June 2012 by record label Interscope ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the fourth single from Lana’s second studio Album, Born to Die.
The Album, released on the 27th of January 2012, received positive reviews from music critics. Born to Die made its debut at number two on the Billboard 200 Chart with sales of 77,000 copies in the first-week. The Album gained a Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) after selling one million units. It reached the top of eleven international Album charts.
The accompanying music video was filmed in Santa Clarita, California. It was directed by Kyle Newman and Spencer Susser. Kyle is an American filmmaker known for directing the 2015 American teen action comedy, Barely Lethal. The film stared Oscar nominees, Hailee Steinfeld and Samuel L. Jackson. He has produced music videos for many top recording artists. Kyle shot the video for ” Style “, Taylor Swift’s Billboard Hot 100 Chart number six single.
Spencer Susser is an American film director, screenwriter and producer. Spencer’s short film, I Love Sarah Jane, which he wrote with David Michôd, won Best Narrative Short at the 2008 Nashville Film Festival, the Reel Frontier Merit Award at the Arizona International Film Festival, and the Canal+ Award at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. The film starred Mia Wasikowska, the Australian-Polish actress.
” Summertime Sadness ” was a commercial success for Lana. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number six on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending twenty-three weeks on the chart. It also reached number five on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of July 2013 and reached a peak of number four. It spent seven weeks in the top ten and a total of fifty weeks on the UK chart.
