The song was the last written for the Album and replaced the first choice ” Put On Your White Sombrero “, it was to be ABBA’s previous number one in the United Kingdom.
” Super Trouper ” is the name for spotlights that projects a bright beam to light up a specific space on a stage.
The name is a registered trademark for following spotlights that are made by a company called Ballantyne Strong from Omaha, Nebraska USA.
The video for ” Super Trouper ” was released in October 1980, for it ABBA gathered the most substantial number of artists they had ever used for any video before.
However the spotlight used in the video is not a Super Trouper spotlight as the song suggests, it is, in fact, a CCT Silhouette follow spotlight that can be seen.
Many people wonder why ABBA mention Glasgow, which is a Scottish city within the United Kingdom. Tthe reason is Howard Huntridge who worked for the then publishers in the UK suggested it to Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and it was included.
ABBA showing resourcefulness reused parts of the video for another song from the same Album; they included elements in the ” Happy new year video”.
The song was to be a huge commercial success for ABBA; they reached Number One in Belgium, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.
Along with reaching the top of the charts in several countries, ABBA also took the song into the top five in Austria, France, Norway, Switzerland and Mexico.
Although ABBA enjoyed success in Europe, the United States didn’t take to the song quite as much. There the single reached number forty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, ” Super Trouper ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 15th of November 1980 and climbed to reach Number One, where it held the top slot for three weeks.
The song stayed in the top ten for eight weeks and spent a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart.
